Nadler Blasts Bill Barr in Scathing NY Times Opinion Letter
Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York on Monday published an editorial in the New York Times telling Attorney General Bill Barr that he must release special counsel Robert Muellers report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election by Tuesday or face legal action from Congress.
Nadler is the chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee.
In the scathing editorial, Nadler called out Barr for writing a very short summary of the Mueller reports conclusions even though that was not required of him. Barr has come under attack from many different directions for publishing his conclusions with no backup, and with no indication that Mueller himself reached the same conclusions.
Nadler also blasted Barr for claiming that he will need several weeks to release a complete (but redacted) copy of the full special counsels report.
The committee chair then criticized Barr for usurping congressional authority and unilaterally declaring President Donald Trump innocent of obstruction of justice before lawmakers even had the opportunity to see Muellers evidence.
In his conclusion, Nadler said that Trumps actions surrounding the Russia investigation may not have been illegal but that didnt mean they should be seen as acceptable.

(130,773 posts)Someday, Trump will not be in office. Congress needs a full accounting of his misdeeds to ensure they dont happen again.

An accounting of Trump's misdeeds, certainly. But also of all of the obstruction, rule changing, lying, delaying tactics that have been a hallmark of the repuglicons in congress and the pResident/entourage.
Somehow we need better checks and balances across the government. A lot has changed in the world since our constitution and other governing documents were put together.
While some might worry about a new set of laws/guiding principals I think the reality of governance in the US now has rendered the original documents ineffectual.

(130,773 posts)Checks and balances work fine IF those playing the game/working in government are honest. Citizens United was a huge cause of our present malaise, enabling people's normal selfishness to run wild.
I'm not optimistic.

(7,142 posts)Democrats have the advantage of passing a unanimous vote in the House to release the Mueller report, that should carry some weight in the courts.
Mitch McConnell's refusal to put up a similar vote in the Senate should be at the top of the news cycle.
Where are the reporters from cnn and msnbc hounding Mitch about stonewalling? Hmm, I guess that cnn and msnbc aren't much different than Fox.
