https://www.mediaite.com/politics/house-democrat-brings-toy-chicken-and-kfc-bucket-to-hearing-to-mock-barrs-no-show/Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) brought props to the House Judiciary Committee hearing that Attorney General William Barr cancelled on: a toy chicken and a bucket of KFC.
Barr faced a onslaught when he testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, and was scheduled to appear before the House Thursday morning. He cancelled the appearance last night, after a spat over terms of the questioning.
The spin House Democrats want to convey is clear: that Barr is too scared to appear for questioning on his handling of Special Counsel Robert Muellers investigation and report. Rep. Jerry Nadler, the chairman of the House committee, said Wednesday night that Barr was terrified.

(101,703 posts)disrespect for Committee and especially Chairman Nadler, I tend to think ridicule is not a bad strategy. "Being the adults in the room" has not gotten us anything but Bothsiderism news coverage and that continues to baffle the public. Stunts like this should be limited, but hell, it WILL give attention to the issue.

(2,412 posts)I agree that it is undignified. But it is using the drama with a touch of popular culture will show the voters that Democrats have the backbone to stand up to Trump and his minions. I think your male voter will love this. Behaving like cowed battered wives or offended effite intellectuals with wordy letters has gotten no respect from your average person who is looking for some stand up leadership.

(1,159 posts)One gets the sense that we really had no backup plan for Barrs refusal to appear at the hearing, just as we had and still have no backup plan if Mueller doesnt somehow single-handedly hold the Trump/Republican criminal enterprise accountable.

THIS is true humor.

And some wonder why Dem voters are SO dis-enchanted with the Democrats in Congress yuking it up and their childish clowning around in the middle of it all.........
And then the Democrat politicians wonder why we are in this mess........
I, for one, am beginning to believe ANY POSSIBLE THING the Dems can do will be far to little and far to late at this point.
The Republicans belligerence seemingly displays that THEY know this to be true and that they have succeeded in overthrowing the American gov't from a quasi democracy to an all out Corpocracy & Fascist state.....controlled by the one percent and the corporations.
They have pulled off a total coup.........

(23,342 posts)Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, the finger and refusing to come before his committee. That's a complete breakdown of the essence of the Constitutional 3 equal branches of government. and Congressional oversight. If this is left to stand, no one in the Executive Branch will ever feel any obligation to comply with Congress. A Constitutional crisis.
I understand Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN)was attempting to make a point. I just think he used the wrong props and made too much of a joke about it. I actually appreciated the comments Rep Cohen made later and using the chicken. To me, that was more effective than chowing down on a bucket of fried chicken.

(24,141 posts)Sometimes ridicule is the right response, and the visual of the chicken figurine next to Barr's nameplate gets the message across.
It won't be the Democrats' only response. They made seriously remarks right after the truncated hearing adjourned, and it won't end there.

(21,856 posts)his cronies have been mocking and making fun of us for way too long and we sit there in silence, not doing anything. This humor is great. I find it kind of disappointing that some do not see that way. Some of the greatest things done in history have been based on humor. Here's some tidbits from Google, which most people have access to...
Humor is one of the great ways to communicate
1. The quality that makes something laughable or amusing; funniness: could not see the humor of the situation.
2. That which is intended to induce laughter or amusement: a writer skilled at crafting humor.
3. The ability to perceive, enjoy, or express what is amusing, comical, incongruous, or absurd: "Man's sense of humor seems to be in inverse proportion to the gravity of his profession" (Mary Roberts Rinehart).
etc.

The internet has given people the hope that they can make their voices heard from all over the world. That could be anyone from advertisers to trolls, hate-mongers and even, yes, comedians.

BTW, Rep Cohen is a Democrat, so before one calls him out as "racist", I'd think you'd want to be very well founded in your argument to that effect. Criticize for being childish. Criticize for deflecting from our issue. But calling him a racist? Perhaps you should research the symbolism of chickens as reflecting cowardliness dating back as far as the 1600s England/Europe and having nothing whatsoever to do with race.
