It has been offered repeatedly in the media the last few weeks that Democrats need to think long and hard about what would happen if they start impeachment proceedings against Trump and now Bill Barr. My response is Americans need to think long and hard about what will happen if they don't impeach.
Democrats have been warned repeatedly, by Trump and right wing media, that Trump and Barr will be coming for Hillary, Obama, Comey, McCabe and all the rest very soon. At some point, it may be too late to effectively push back.
On 23 March 1933, the Reichstag met in Berlin. The main item on the agenda was a new law, the 'Enabling Act'. It allowed Hitler to enact new laws without interference from the president or Reichstag for a period of four years. The building where the meeting took place was surrounded by members of the SA and the SS, paramilitary organisations of the NSDAP that had by now been promoted to auxiliary police forces. In his speech, Hitler gave those present the choice between 'war and peace'. It was a veiled threat to intimidate any dissenters. The process was by no means democratic. With 444 votes in favor and 94 against, the Reichstag adopted
Democrats need to act now before they can't act at all!

(11,885 posts)And I'm hoping some GOP Senators will switch party and replace Mitch , and take control of the Senate for the Democrats , and to protect themselves and our Democracy, and our country and its people. Can't believe they are all so scared to do this, and stop this madman before it escalates into something that can't be fixed.

(46,080 posts)Hitler went to the Reichstag and his party had minority status.
He appealed for them to vote for his Enabling Law. He spoke calmly and quietly. He explained that Germany would remain the same. Freedom of the Press. Freedom to Assemble. Free elections. Etc. And the German Legislature gave up their power and status to one man: Adolf Hitler.
A few months later, Hitler proved that he was lying. All opposition parties were abolished. Newspapers shut down. Citizens afraid to criticize Hitler in public.
It's simple: Don't trust any leader who says "Trust me!"

(58,785 posts)At the increasingly authoritarian Republican Party and what it's fronting for. Note the behavior of Republican senators? Conservative packed courts at all levels? Crimes against democracy committed by a majority of red state governments? Widespread election theft? Militarization and hostility toward populace of many local governments? Acceptance of assistance by hostile foreign governments?
How about the RW kleptocracy which controls a very large share of the wealth in this nation? Massive infiltration of our media by RW agents? Over 1/3 of all our fellow citizens trained as attack dogs against the Democrats who are the protectors of our democracy, most ready to sieg heil to their leader with little further adjustment?
They've been coming for our republic for decades now, and it's only become obvious as they've come close enough to see. For those who aren't deluded into imagining the scary clown is our only big problem.
This vicious, cowardly boob does want to be a dictator, to make "my people" "sit up at attention" when he speaks. He's not the only one, though. Once enough of the kind of power he imagines was achieved, I suspect his life might be measured in hours, at most in days. In all likelihood, though, they'd maintain a faux democracy and put on a display of removing him legally.
Of course, we are acting. You don't fight an overthrow of democracy by overthrowing it yourself, and we're not putting on a display of fake legal processes. And we're including a larger and larger majority of the electorate, who don't like what they're only starting to see and becoming engaged. The midterms let me sleep much better at night, but November 3, 2020 is going to be the big battle "for the soul of America."
