On Saturday, Madonna will receive the Advocate for Change Award at the GLAAD Media Awards. Ahead of the ceremony, the pop legend has shared a new single from her upcoming Madame Xcalled I Rise, it couples lyrics that directly reference gun violence with samples from Emma González, a Stone Douglas High School shooting survivor, who gave a powerful, moving pro-gun control speech last year. [They say] us kids dont know what were talking about, González says at the songs outset, that were too young to understand how the government works. We call BS.

I *heart* Madonna
Haters go ahead, but you won't change me and you won't change her.

(29,187 posts)(on edit) Heres what she says about the track: I wrote I Rise as a way of giving a voice to all marginalized people who feel they dont have the opportunity to speak their mind, Madonna said in a statement. This year is the 50th anniversary of Pride and I hope this song encourages all individuals to be who they are, to speak their minds and to love themselves.

Shes as talented a marketer as she is a writer/performer.
Thanks for posting, Coventina.

(2,227 posts)Madonna has stayed at the top, changing with the times. She is really good at that. She also tries to use her platform for good. I'm sure we will hear from her regarding 2020.
My partner and I were lucky enough to see the Confessions on the Dance Floor tour, which was blatantly anti-Bush, at Madison Square Garden.
In a matter of hours she sold out 6 nights at the Garden, they added another and it sold it.
It was the most exciting concert I have ever witnessed.
And my concert days started way back in the day, with Herman's Hermits, Stones, Sonny and Cher, Beach Boys, Grand Funk Railroad, music started to grow up, then both Atlanta International Pop Festivals, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck Group, all the great heavies, Todd Rundgren, Yes, B-52s, Kiss. Damn it, my car broke down on the way to the Village People Concert (certainly not a heavy music act, but them playing in the Jacksonville Coliseum was groundbreaking. Plus it was part of my coming out process...). And there are many concerts that I can't remember... for obvious reasons or acts that were not top billed acts (concerts like Jeff Beck, which started with Argent, then Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, then It's a Beautiful Day, THEN Jeff Beck Group).
Unfortunately, I still have the tickets to see the Beatles in Jacksonville. Hurricane Dora had just landed the day before and the parents found that as a good excuse to nix the trip.
If you had a chance to see Madonna's Rebel Heart Tour on HBO you get a good idea of what her concert spectacles are like. Her concerts are, literally, a giant PARTY!!!
They are ELECTRIC, and visually stunning!
At the Garden the tickets said the concert was at 8. Packed house of course. Then while waiting the guy sitting next to us went to the snack stand, where he was told that, like previous nights, she would start promptly at 9, and it would end exactly at 11, with no encore. And that is exactly how it went down. Her concerts are timed to the second, which, as shown in the Rebel Heart Tour video, allows her to mix concert footage from different concerts to make the videos. She is, literally, spinning during a song as her outfits change, or she pulls up her different famous "bitches" from the audience.
I will add that after that concert, Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon), Led Zeppelin in Tampa Stadium, and Yes (Tales From Topographic Oceans) rank in my top, ever, concerts.
The second most ENERGEIZED concert was KISS. I felt so old. The average age was probably 17, and the crowd was on their feet, screaming, the entire concert.
So it's not like I have nothing to compare them to.....
