I was a jerk today.

I was in the Pick and Save grocery store in Menomonee Falls Wi, a "staunch" repub area. I was not in a good mood for several reasons, among them the fact that someone had recently flipped me off after seeing my Obama bumper stickers. Anyway, I have a sticker with a picture of a golden retriever and the words "I ride inside, dogs against Romney.com". Anyway a guy in his 60s, like me, sees it and says "at least Romney didn't eat his dog." Now if I was in my normal mood I would have said something like "people in other parts of the world eat things we would not and vice versa. They are cultural differences. I am glad we have a president who has experienced some of these cultural differences instead of a guy who has lived all his life in his own little restricted cultural bubble." That would have been a rational response to his idiocy. Instead, my response was "fuck you, wanna make something out of it?" I know I was wrong to respond this way and I'm usually not a confrontational person. But I am so sick of repub morons. Will some of the folks at DU at least tell me they know how I might have felt? That way maybe I can stop feeling ashamed of myself.

Shouting obscenities at each other is a symptom of the polarization of the body politic.

Shouting obscenities is not going to solve any problems, particularly polarization, and not the problems that America faces.

Freedom to speak does not mean that all speech is equally good. Some speech is destructive, like this. The solution of course is not less speech (censorship or self-censorship) but more speech and better speech.

Of course. But it is based on scientific studies.

He and I are not saying don't get angry. Anger is sometimes a hard to avoid gut reaction. However, by being rational and calm about life, it won't control us. The point is to get beyond anger so that it doesn't need to be expressed emotionally.

Turn anger into deliberate and conscious action toward goals, which includes talking to assholes in ways that make it clear to all bystanders and the asshole himself that he is an asshole. Shouting profanty does not accomplish this. It simply informs all bystanders that there is at least one asshole there, namely the one shouting obscenities, and they almost certainly did not hear the remark that prompted it. So from their perspective it is one-sided and not a pretty sight.

You were standing up to a common bully and wise-ass. Too many of our fellow Democrats will condemn you for "stepping down to his level."

They're boneheads. Where I come from, when you give back to a bully what he gave you, that's not "stepping down," that's self defense. We only encourage their rude, disgusting behavior by being silent about it.

Some elitist types would think that you're practicing admirable self-restraint if you just kept your mouth shut and didn't say anything back to him. But, in the primitive, animalistic, reptilian mind of the average bully (which includes most repubs), your restraint is perceived as weakness. And that perception of weakness only encourages them to keep up on the attack, whether you're talking about a verbal attack or a physical one.

Sad, but true. You can't reason with a bully.

It would be nice to think that a reasoned response by the OP would have made this person see the light or even think twice about his position. He will never see it from someone from our camp.

This person has "issues." In a society that supposedly values multiple points of view, it is unacceptable to accost a person who is merely expressing his right to free speech.

So mysuzuki2, even if you had managed some restraint, it really wouldn't have accomplished anything. You're right to have been concerned about your response, though. A person should generally try to be reasonable.

Get real... those are tax dodges for the mega rich..

Romney tells suckers that he's running for Pres to create more jobs..He's had millions of dollars in offshore accounts for years if he really meant to promote USA jobs....... No... all the man thinks about is money...HIS money.. and all he wants is to have new laws on the books that save him and mega millionaires like him to use American resources, outsource them, bag the difference and put it into a tax-free Swiss account.

Give me a break"...

And mysuzuki2 was right: these destructive morons will never get it, so they deserve it, especially when they ask for it.

If someone does make that comment again, remind him that as a child we eat what is prepared for us, according to our family customs. President Obama did not cook a dog.. he ate something that was served in his household. If he was serving dog in the White House, then it would be a problem. Romney? He did that AS an adult. It was his choice. Big diff.

A jerkish blurt and a jerkish response aren't double plus good.

You can hold your own and make the Republican guy look like the asshole he is without stooping to his level. It's practically impossible to make him look like an asshole by responding with profanity. It's a lot easier if you stand your ground and make him be the one to over-react and foam at the mouth and make a disgusting scene; and it can be done without raising a voice or swearing obscenities or calling him names.

It's tough when strangers attack you. For a moment you're speechless. Then after the fact you think of something that might have been appropriate and you kick yourself. I'm glad you said what you said. When attacked with lies, hate and abject bigotry, fight back. He won't forget meeting you anytime soon. And I believe that's a good thing.

Kind of like leap year, but instead, you get to throw down the towel of toleration and let your inner jerk flag fly, baby.

The only thing I might have done differently was borrow from the line in Arthur, when hearing what he said, rub your chin with a deep thought look on your face, and respond.. "You might have a point in narrow circumstances... on the other hand, go SCREW yourself."

Sorry: I don't care what side of the political divide you are on, you don't get to use physically-challenging language or adopt threatening physical postures toward those who disagree with you, solely on the basis that you are not in a "good mood."

So, yeah: to the extent this anecdote is true, you were a jerk, and should feel ashamed of your behavior.

The replies supporting you in this thread are equally egregious: were the tale reversed, and it was an aggressive Freeper acting this way toward a liberal guy "in his 60s" the screams of "threats" and "assault" and "intimidation" would be non-stop. Really disgraceful that supposed progressives are telling you that you actually did good.

We all have those. As a buddhist, I do believe we can control our emotions and our actions, but we are not perfect and we do make mistakes. The only advise I would give is maybe try to be aware and recognize when you are feeling frustrated or angry. When someone provokes you, take a deep breath and wait a few seconds before responding that way you say exactly what you mean to say. but don't beat yourself up over it. You can't go back in time and change what happened in this particular instance, but you can do something about how you react in future circumstances.

I was sitting in a parking lot waiting for a friend in front of a Starbucks, when some right winger sees my Obama 12 bumper sticker. My window was down, and I heard him say (just loud enough for me to hear him), "Obama sucks balls". Without even looking to see who it was (or how big he was, or what he looked like), I just stuck my head out of my window and yelled out, "HEY! Go fuck your mom!". It was pretty out of character for me, and he quickly jumped in his truck with his girlfriend and took off.

Not my proudest moment, and even I was sort of shocked at my reaction, but I think I've had it with shit talking RWingers. I'm just DONE with them. So, I was WAY jerkier than you.

There are days I find it difficult to bite my tongue, as well.

My self-help step, to make it better, is typically to do something unexpectedly nice for someone else who needs it. I figure, karma-tically, it comes out even, if I do something nice.
