2021 Could Be a Nightmare for Democrats -- Even If Trump Loses

It all comes back to you in an instant, the flashing images in your mind alternating with the crowd’s chant, like light and darkness beneath a strobe lamp: LOCK HER UP; the Upshot’s needle swinging blue to red; LOCK HER UP; those last 10,000 votes in Waukesha County; LOCK HER UP; the headlines heralding RBG’s death right before Christmas; LOCK HER UP; Supreme Court Justice Sarah Huckabee Sanders; LOCK HER UP; the bombs already falling over Tehran; LOCK HER UP; the president’s face as he signed “The Voting Wrongs Act of 2021”; LOCK HER UP; Elizabeth Warren being led to a squad car in handcuffs; LOCK HER UP; and now, as they turn toward you, their red hats glowing in the winter sun, you realize that you are her, this place is a prison — and your sentence is another four years to life.

Liberals are well-prepared for this kind of “2021 nightmare.” They’ve been fearing it since November 9, 2016. To avert such a terror, they took to the streets in historic numbers the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, and showed up at the polls en masse last fall. And they’re right to be afraid. Each day, Trump grows a bit more lawless, and the Executive branch a bit less willing to defy him. Another four years of judicial appointments would give the conservative movement a hammerlock on the judiciary for a generation. And in that time, Trump’s judges could rubber-stamp changes to election laws that further erode what remains of popular sovereignty in this republic — and the world’s most powerful nation would stumble four years closer to climate catastrophe.

Trump’s reelection would be a nightmare. But for Democrats, defeating him and winning the presidency in 2021 could be its own kind of horror show.

Democratic presidential candidates have to begin campaigning with the mantra to vote democratic down the line, esp. Senate candidates.

Democratic presidential candidates should be campaigning with democratic candidates for the Senate NOW, and consistently.

That article was a bunch of “woe is me why go on” BS.

I really don’t think it was an appropriate thing to post here.

Myself, I feel empowered and want to canvass in states outside mine.

It is just beginning, not ending IMO.

New York is not some Russian front publication churning out propaganda here. Our human rights and our democracy are on the line here.

Attempts to minimize the danger make it worse.

Once we confront the facts, and build the path forward based upon the facts, however grim those be, depression begins to evaporate.

Didn’t I hear, once upon a time, those immortal words: damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Sorry, do not buy it. Trying to depress us, are you?

Voting for a Democrat for President is insufficient. We have to get the word out to vote democratic from President to local council.

and we were largely unaware of the extent of the business interests between so many in the US and Russia in 2016. We have so far paid a huge price for unpreparedness.

H. Clinton and a few retired intelligence people in U. S. sounded the alarm but it was not enough. Immediately after the election there were many attempts to normalize that election and so many fell in line but many others realized something was deeply wrong.

There was time wasted while some tried to explain away the outcome of Election 2016 as a case of having a bad candidate who just needed to make a few more trips to a few states and everything would have been just fine in the USA

I believe that if some of us had not heeded the alarms during the election cycle the normalization would have been much more successful and we would be in an even worse position now.

We, as county have been in a war and have been in denial of that fact-much like England in 1938 , when the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain declared after signing the bad deal to appease Hitler: Peace in Our Time! The reality however, was there would be no peace, instead there was war. The survival of Britain was at stake and the events of that war forever changed the status of England in the world.

Putin did not have a military to defeat the US. He did however have the tools and the cunning to engage in a modern form of warfare. He led a country that had attempted democracy but slipped back into a strongman-style dictatorship, and he launched an Intelligence and Propaganda War. So far it has been successful.

By now it should be clear that D. Trump has decimated our State Department and is implementing Putin's foreign foreign policy-but it is not yet clear to everyone. and every day the power of Putin to destroy becomes stronger and becomes for us, harder to combat.

The first step forward is this: Acknowledge our position-we are in a war declared upon us by a foreign power, we have a presidency that is acting in the service of the foreign power.

Once we acknowledge the facts, we can mount a meaningful defense and we will have placed ourself on the road to win back what we have lost and deal with all the challenges we face.
