Ga. Mayor Says City is 'Not Ready' for Black Employee.

Councilman Agrees, Citing Jesus' Stance Against Race-Mixing

By: Michael Harriot

The mayor of a nearly all-white Georgia town has come under fire after allegedly acknowledging that she disqualified a candidate for employment because of his race. Meanwhile, her fellow city councilman excused her actions, explaining that interracial relationships are against his religion.

The small town of Hoschton, Ga., is 84.6 percent white and only 3.5 percent black, according to census data. So when the small town recently narrowed its search for a city administrator down to four potential employees, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that one candidate was specifically excluded by the mayor’s office “because he is black, and the city isn’t ready for this.”

Mayor Theresa Kenerly reportedly told a member of the city council that she removed Keith Henry, a black man, for consideration for the job. But when Kenerly was asked about the allegations, she stated that she “can’t say I said it or not said it,” adding that she could not comment on things that happened in executive sessions.

“I do not recall making the statement attributed to me regarding any applicant for the City Administrator position,” she later said in a statement, before adding the trademark racist grammatical error. “I deny that I made any statement that suggest (sic) prejudice.”

Councilman Cleveland revealed that he also ranked the black candidate last. But he says he only did so because Henry did not come in for an in-person interview, not because of Henry’s race. Then Cleveland explained how not racist he was by testifying about his Christian teachings:

I’m a Christian and my Christian beliefs are you don’t do interracial marriage. That’s the way I was brought up and that’s the way I believe...I have black friends, I hired black people. But when it comes to all this stuff you see on TV, when you see blacks and whites together, it makes my blood boil because that’s just not the way a Christian is supposed to live.

Hmm wasn't it Joseph, who was sold into slavery in Egypt and ended up married to an Egyptian, who gave him the sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. This is such BS. The Bible is full of inter-racial marriages, including David and Bathsheba. Solomon bed many women of many nationalities.

although I seldom mention it if it's obviously just a typo. But I've noticed lately that even famous novelists make the blond/blonde error. That one kind of bugs me, for some reason....

No offense intended.

...late is the increasing occurrence of people making a possessive out of “I.” When I hear things like “John and I’s vacation,” it is all I can do not to shriek in horror.

I will solicit your opinion on the possessive of “guys.” I keep hearing “guyses,” as in “You guyses back packs are already out in the car.” I think it is one of those instances where the possessive of a word already ending in ‘s’ needs only an apostrophe to make the possessive.

And don’t get me going on the aggravating practice that ANY word that ends in ‘s’ must have an apostrophe.

I’ll bet you and I could have a most enjoyable IRL conversation.

I never run a spellchecker, although I will take note of words that are underlined automatically. I make typos too, but not too many. I edited a book last month (written by a professional novelist) that had 500 typos in 100 pages...! All I could do was shake my head.

What's IRL?

I don't care if African Americans make up 3.5% or 0.1% of the town. They pay taxes; they vote; and they have a right to be represented in government.

I feel sick. I really think that we are witnessing the end of the American experiment in democracy.

They are not Christians. This is one I ask adults. Abraham Lincoln - "How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg? Four. Saying that a tail is a leg doesn't make it a leg." Most get it wrong.
