Amazon agrees to new safety policies after toxic metals found in children's products
Amazon agreed to new safety measures after a Washington Attorney General's Office investigation found at least 15,000 school supplies and jewelry products purchased from Amazon.com including nearly 600 in Washington contained dangerous amounts of lead and cadmium.
The Seattle-based company agreed to pay $700,000 to settle potential claims and avoid a lawsuit, according to an agreed signed Thursday and filed in the King County Superior Court. Amazon did not admit to wrongdoing as part of the agreement, according to the filing.
Amazon has not responded to a request for more information about the company's process for vetting third-party sellers.
The company will block the sale of children's school supplies and jewelry sold in the U.S. without lab reports and other forms of proof from sellers showing products are non-toxic. About 18,000 sellers offer approximately 900,000 children's school supplies and jewelry items, according to the AG's office.
