(6,150 posts)We are the largest facilitator of murder and mayhem in this world through our arms sales, training, and technological support of governments that use this to suppress their citizens and attack their neighbors.
It's been this way since at least the 1950's.
And that doesn't even count all the wars and "police actions" we have participated in.
Bot parties are at fault here.

(3,522 posts)Drilled into you in grade school and held up as a platitude while selling arms and exporting terror around the world. Since well before either world war, at least as far back as the early 20th century the main foreign policy objectives of the US government has been to promote and enforce rapacious capitalism within its boundaries of military influence. If that meant overthrowing democratically elected nationalist parties throughout Central America and the Caribbean and installing a few brutal and repressive dictators then thats what was done. The primary objective was always about protecting and promoting the interests of large corporations invested in these banana republics and third world countries, NOT promoting peace and democracy.

(16,697 posts)in tragedy with helicopter crashes. As a nuclear submarine officer under Admiral Rickover, Carter was immensely qualified in the military sense, but also was a very smart and compassionate person. God, I wish ANY of those traits existed today in our leadership. Jimmy walks the walk. And fuck the GOP who has always hated him. He really saw the need for peace and struck a Middle East peace accord which was truly a monumental agreement.
The GOP offers nothing except war and selling more weapons. Morally and spiritually bankrupt.

(11,512 posts)Maybe its all three. Regardless, Carters decency & goodness has, without a doubt, withstood the test of time.

(81,099 posts)And the Reagan people made a deal with the Iranian hostage takers to keep holding the American hostages whom Carter had worked so hard to free - so that a release before the election wouldnt help him and leave Reagan at a disadvantage. The schmucks! Sheesh, weve had loads of republi-CON CHEATERS since at least 1979.
The hostages were officially released on fucking Reagans inauguration. I remember him announcing it that day. Bastard. And if I remember correctly he didnt even have the decency to mention President Carters 444 days of work trying to get their release, often staying in the White House to keep working at it, instead of campaigning for re-election.
Just one of many reasons Ill never NOT hate Reagan. Just another smooth-talking vainglorious idiot salesman with a smooth sales pitch. The CONS always seem to have an abundance of those types.
Somehow I take comfort in the aftermath of both of them. Carter became internationally respected and admired as an inspiring and major force behind the Habitat for Humanity organization. He and Rosalynn actually took up hammers and nails to help do the building when the group had projects set up. Remarkable people, still, today. Reagan on the other hand, jumped straight into how much can I make as a speaker on what he called the mashed potato circuit. He grabbed a two million dollar speaking gig in Japan straight away. But at that point, his Alzheimers had progressed to the point where he was unable to exploit anything. So he went home to adult diapers and drool, and a house full of distinguished mementos and testimonials, and had no idea what they were or why they were there.
Seems fitting, somehow.
