Qantas is looking to initiate Sydney - Melbourne service to Heathrow and New York and is seeking the development of new generation, ultra long-range aircraft;

The article mentions they already operate Perth to LHR (17 bleedin' hours!!!) and today's flight is using a B787-9

3. I flew quite a bit in the '90s, some 15 and 16 hour legs of long trips.

I don't fly any more...

5. I did the LAX - SYD several times in the 90's

My day started in Detroit, so fly to LAX, get there around 4 or so then wait till 10 or 11 PM when many of the westbound transpacific flights took off. Ended up at the Gold Coast, QNSL, leaving Sunday morning, arriving Tuesday mid day after around 36 hours of travel and losing Monday altogether!!
