Could it be that the Russian funds have stopped coming in since the 2016 election is in the past? Was the NRA relying too much on that money?
Hmm....

(146,286 posts)It's easy to get used to money coming in and forget that it might not always be the same. Lots of people get in trouble that way. Could the NRA be that naive?

(6,390 posts)They have to be used to the "peak and trough" of donations during the current office holder. But what if, they started seeing a slower and larger rise in donations? And assumed it was all legit (blindly believing more Americans were on-board with guns or were suddenly richer). So lets say, the rule of thumb was donations are 20% lower during a Republican Presidency....but they incorporated Russian Money into that figure.
And even in non-profits, corruption often takes hold when large sums of money start rolling in...and they get comfortable with that lifestyle.
But once the election is over, donations don't drop 20%...they drop double that. Executives are going to be begrudgingly taking a hit to their lifestyle. And first opt to cut at the rank and file.
I don't think the NRA is going anywhere any time soon, but wouldn't it be ironic, they were the own architects of their demise?

(118,275 posts)There were reports that LaPierre spent $39,000 a day on clothes and $3450 a month for an intern's apartment. And then there were rumors of extortion. But of course nobody has a clue who could possibly have been the mark in a blackmail game or what the alleged bad behavior might have been

As for LaPierre--well, he is a Republicans with access to a lot of money that isn't his, but that he could use to spend on himself. What did you expect? Donations to the American Cancer Society?
