He's on fire, nailing him on romney's birther joke and playing the race card by attacking welfare recipients. Awesome!

Kudos to Tweety for saying what the REAL Elephant in that room is...the blatant racism and verbose rhetoric of his corrupt and inept party. And, of course, there's Broke-craw babbling about "Democrats do it, too"...more of that bullshit false equivelency game the corporate media loves to play.

(22,911 posts)Many he has known and liked as people. That used to be more common in the political era when he earned his stripes. So he defends many Republicans as being patriotic Americans who love their country and their community and want what is best for the public - though opinions will differ etc,
I think Mathews personally liked George W. Bush and thought that his attempt to be a "compassionate" conservative had some sincerity to it. But he hates what the Republcan Party is turning into now. It deeply offends him to see them cynically playing Americans off against each other. Romney has mortally wounded Mathew's sense of civility in politics, and he is pissed. Mathews buys the American dream and senses that Romney and team are content with burying it for most of us as long as they can prosper. That's my hit anyway.

(40,416 posts)I am an old Dem who sometimes have voted Rep. But, there's always a reason. For instance, when I lived in Kansas and was even a Dem party officer, I voted for Nancy Landon Kassebaum. Twice!! Over the Dem opponent. Why? Because she was much more liberal than the Dem. And because I recognized the value of having a liberal in the Republican caucus.
But, like Tweety, I am done with that cross-aisle politics. I haven't voted for a single Republican this century, nor will I.
I have always liked Tweety, although I have disagreed with some of what he says. Nobody's perfect and Matthews' heart and soul has always been in the right place. Just maybe now he has the permission to say so.

(71,611 posts)He is accustomed to dealing with people he loves in a civil manner, and I doubt very much that his family GOPhers stoop to the "Southern Strategy" of racism, bigotry, and talibornagainism that has taken over the GOP in the last 30 years. Folks who're "Eisenhower era" Republicans are foreigners in their own party. IMHO, this is the EVIL of partisanship where the misplaced "loyalty" to party trumps principles and humane stances. I eschewed "Democrats" in the days of Jim Crow and could NEVER offer my support for those bigots. It's why I couldn't bring myself support Jimmy Carter and had a very hard time coming around to the Clinton/Gore ticket. I LIVED in the south for a while during Jim Crow -- it was HORRIBLE. We're now seeing a Democratic Party that's largely to the right of the Eisenhower era GOP!
Tweety loves the "game" of politics ... but draws a bright line at racism.

(8,064 posts)While priebus was repeating the lie that President Obama "raided" Medicare to pay for "obamacare", tweety looked like he was about to pounce, but held his tongue.. For a few minutes anyway. And once priebus tried to blow off romneys birther "joke", tweety couldn't hold back anymore. I think it was just one lie too many for him to be a non-journalist like the rest of them on the panel.
I hope that tweety wanders around the convention looking for priebus so he can make him answer why the republicans insist on playing the race card in the year 2012.

(13,395 posts)but they think it is. Most are poor white people, many of whom do work. They just imagine it's minorities.
I took diversity training a few years ago at the blood center where I work. the had us in groups playing a Jeopardy style game. One question was, what ethnic group has the most people on welfare, white, black or hispanic? I told my group it was white people and it wasn't even close. I normally work at a small remote site on mobiles, so the people in my group didn't really know me well or trust me to know the answer. I can't remember what answer they chose but they overruled me and blew it.
Another question was what percentage of people in the USA are gay? I told them 10%. I don't remember what the other choices were. I said that even if you disagree, the accepted figure is 10% and you hear it all the time. They blew that one too. This at a business where the majority are women and is considered to be quite progressive. I can only imagine what you'd get at a more redneck staffed business.

(13,395 posts)them. If I were to call my girlfriends daughter a "welfare momma", I'd be banned from their house for life. Four births paid for by the state, WIC, Medicaid for the kids and food assistance. Yet she is an evangelical christian conservative. Go figure.
I was right here when she was on the phone trying to convince her mom to vote for McCain so that Obama wouldn't get it.
bushisanidiot
(8,064 posts)In such a way that it is (wrongly) accepted that welfare recipients are mostly minorities.
They've also driven the conversation on health care so that the affordable care act is commonly referred to as "Obama care". In fact, priebus said in this exchange that 'it's called Obama care'.
They've also driven the conversation so that it's commonly accepted that social security is "running out of money".
They just repeat lies, without being strongly challenged, and the lies become accepted as truth.
And I know I'm preaching to the choir.

(13,395 posts)if it's not strictly right-wing propaganda, it's liberal lies.
Most people, even some on our side, don't fully understand what a straight news story vs editorial opinion is. I spent three years in high school on a true college level journalism program. National Scholastic Achievement award for the best high school newspaper in the country, for the 13th year in a row when I graduated. As a rookie sophomore, I and everyone else got busted repeatedly for injecting opinion into news stories we were working on. You really can't help it. It takes practice to not do it. My grammar doesn't always reflect the training these days. I literally went 20 years without typing anything at one stretch. It's easy to forget the basics.
I've tried to explain to right wingers that journalists at one time, probably were mostly liberal, but that didn't mean they wouldn't give you the straight news. Wealthy people and business men didn't exactly encourage their kids to go into journalism. It's a rough way to make a living starting out as a cub reporter. We really don't have the kind of newspaper industry I'm talking about anymore anyway.
It used to be that the people on TV came up through the ranks, starting in newspapers or small TV stations to make the big time. They definitely would have tended to be liberal. It's not really that way now.

(10,148 posts)He pissed me off royally with his dogged hatred of the Clintons. And lost me, I thought, all together when he crawled up Dubya's butt. However, he did hate Cheney, so I hung on by a thread because I never thought he was a bad man, a la LImbaugh, Weiner, Beck, etc. who are evil.
Today he redeemed himself in spades. It was doubly delightful for me, and I'm sure others in my situtation, to see him call out that sniveling little rat-fucker Priebus who is unfortunately from Wisconsin. This is the ugliest group of people in Wisconsin that I can ever recall and he's a ring leader.

Moment of levity my ass. Is he proud that no one has ever called him a N*, too Priebus? It's a disgusting pathetic EMBARRASSMENT to America that any Candidate would even THINK to refer to the birther bullshit in a joking manner.
No rational intelligent person wants to encourage or nurture THAT mindset in America. But the reTHUGlican teaparty flip flop etcha sketch Candidate went there. Disgusting moment in America in history! Shameful!
Way to go Chris Matthews, Thank You SO much.
