(6,960 posts)If you keep in mind that Matthews had his formative political education and experiences in the 1960s, he is fairly consistent.
He sees things through the lens of Philadelphia machine politics ... and he isn't 'radical' or even very progressive; he's a mainline Democrat.
He was a Carter White House staffer so he sees presidential politics from the inside out.
So, Matthews is a conventional analyst that doesn't ever stray too far from the party line.
I think the Bush years had him quite conflicted between the 'patriotism' that 9-11 evoked for a lot of people and the crass intolerance of Bush/Cheney/Rove.
But Matthews has been rather dependable in his support of Pres. Obama.
And, I think the race baiting and dog whistle bigotry towards Obama has always gotten up his dander.

(23,629 posts)I agree he was conflicted during the whole 9-11 period. He is I think, very patriotic. While not a fan of "W" he tried to walk a thin line between supporting/criticizing the president. There were times I wanted to throw something at the TV with some of the things he has said, but overall he is a good left wing advocate. He cannot tolerate this whole RW meme against Obama and that was very obvious in that clip.

(13,558 posts)awhile. Good job by him today but you can't overlook his past behavior. He was absolutely giddy over how wonderful his President (Bush) was. It made me throw up in my mouth a little.

(13,558 posts)things carefully to let their more gullible viewers think that Bush actually landed the plane. He didn't actually say Bush landed it. I guarantee you every last carrier pilot in the Navy would disobey a direct order from the commander in chief if he was actually dumb enough to think he could even try it. A lot of people wouldn't know that though. If the actually believed Bush even really flew jets, ( I don't ) they might just think he'd be qualified to land one on a carrier too.

(107,839 posts)In other words the guy can dish it out but can't take it.
When was sissy a term ever used to describe women? Or maybe you meant to answer the guy who used the term girly man?
chervilant
(8,267 posts)I was mistaken in presuming that you could stretch your critical thinking skills...
From Wikipedia:
Sissy (derived from sister; also sissy baby, sissy boy, etc.) is a pejorative term for a boy or man who violates or does not meet the traditional male gender role. Generally, sissy implies a lack of courage and stoicism, which are thought important to the male role. A man might also be considered a sissy for being interested in traditional feminine hobbies or employment (e.g., being fond of fashion), displaying effeminate behavior (e.g., saying "mua mua" before hanging up the phone or using creams), being unathletic, or being homosexual.
Also:
A sissy is a man who crossdresses, adopts hyper-feminine behaviors, and engages in stereotypical "feminine" activities (e.g. housekeeping, putting on make-up), often within the context of BDSM.
From Free Dictionary:
sis·sy (ss)
n. pl. sis·sies
1. A boy or man regarded as effeminate.
2. A person regarded as timid or cowardly.
3. Informal Sister.
I could provide many other resources to insure that you understand that 'sissy' has long been used as a sexist pejorative, but I sincerely doubt that you are open to information which challenges your sexist point of view.
Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin
(107,839 posts)Read what you referenced. Sissy is and insult to men not women.
Clearly reading is not your strong suit.
chervilant
(8,267 posts)and you probably never will.
By calling a man a 'sissy,' you are saying that he evinces 'feminine' behaviors. The underlying theme is that masculine behaviors are preferable--and better than--feminine behaviors.
I find that most sexists are virulently resistant to understanding that sexism is damaging to both genders.
For more--if you are the rare individual who is open to unlearning sexist behaviors--read Dorothy Dinnerstein's The Mermaid and the Minotaur.
(Sissy is an insult to both men and women...)

If there was a point for Matthews to turn on Obama, like he did Bush, it would have been in 2010 when Obama was getting his rear end kicked in by anyone and everyone. He didn't. He's been solidly supportive of the President since, really, day one and while he might critique what Obama is doing and criticize this or that, he's been ... consistent. Very consistent. (570 posts)Chris gets so emotional and constantly interrupts. Yes, he won this round, but he could have landed so many more solid blows to Priebus.
1. How do you figure Obamacare had foreign influence when it was modeled directly after Romneycare in Massachusetts. I'm sure the people in Massachusetts appreciate your clarifying their status as U.S. citizens.
2. Obama has spent his life investing in America by serving the people as a community organizer, State Senator, U.S. Senator and as President. Romney has spent his life investing in money by off-shoring American jobs and sucking up to every tax loop hole he can get his mitts on.
3. So which do you really think has more foreign influence? Obama who keeps his money here and pays his fair share of taxes. Or Romney who has his investments and cash stashed all over the world in offshore accounts and pays less than half the tax rate of an average middle class American family.
4. We honestly don't know how much foreign operatives influence Romney because he's chosen to live under a shroud of secrecy, while Obama has embraced openness and transparency. Don't believe me? Just look at who has and who has not released his tax returns.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)so's you can understand it.
There's just a couple of minutes. Lliterally. Chris gets to ask a couple of questions. Literally. Not four. Not five. Not three. Two. And he gets to RESPOND to the answer or non-answer, as the case may be. Then the interviewee gets to answer (or not answer, again), and Chris can insist on responding (until Joe Scabby interrupts and makes Chris let the responder respond AGAIN).
All of that happens in a couple of minutes. There's no long, drawn out discussion of deep issues. They weren't discussing foreign policy or foreign operatives or that crap.
Everyone was taking turns asking Priebus about the convention, about political strategy, about the advertising. Priebus is NOT the candidate.
About Tweety, he is by nature an emotional, impassioned person. That's his downfall....and his charm. It's what gives him the balls to tell a "birther" on his show "that's nuts! That's just crazy talk!" when no one else would say it that forthrightly.
No one's perfect. Not Tweety. Not me. And not you. Have you heard ANY other Democrat on TV address these clowns that directly? No! Rachel doesn't because the clowns won't even talk to her. Same thing with Big Ed.
O'Donnell is exactly like Tweety, BTW. Only more irritating and more partisan, and absolutely will not let people answer sometimes.

(23 posts)Bottom line is that these advisors are not used to dealing with tough questions. Instead of answering, they defend by attacking. I hope the Koch brothers aren't able to buy this election. Romney would be a disaster.

(5,787 posts)Gawd what I would give to see more of our own democratic party members giving the GOP hell like this. This should set an example on to treat the shit that comes from the GOP on a daily basis.
Way to go Chris.

(2,577 posts)Chris finally called a Rethuglican's lying bluff. And that is obviously a no-no, judging by the tut-tutting going on with Joe, Mika, and the aging and useless Tom Brokaw.
Priebus is an empty little weasel ... typical Rethuglican. They really sicken me. They hold all of us in such contempt. We are stupid little pawns who can be sucked dry while they hoard their billions.
But Chris broke the "rule." A "good reporter" (except for those fair and balanced folks on Fox) is just supposed to sit and drool while the Rethuglican lies and spews hatred and stupidity. It will be interesting to see if there are repercussions.

(5,275 posts)That was awesome.....Chris not just accepting this tool's BS answers as MSM types usually do as he bored in for the kill. Priebus looked like a deer in the headlights. Of course, as others have pointed out, Tweety has a lot to make for after his fawning get a room stroking of Dubya on that carrier. He gushed like a schoolgirl that night.
Brokaw has forgotten his roots and at his age might pull a muscle trying so hard to be impartial.
Meanwhile, I wonder if the name of Dubya will even be brought up at this convention.

(633 posts)Chris start up his destruction on Priebus? She and Joe had to know that the storm was about to hit full force and there was nothing they could do to stop it.

(4,775 posts)She was also telling Chris to work on his tone, in other words, to tone it down. My take on her has always been that she's an intelligent, strong woman who attempts to present herself as a voice of reason, but who is actually a very useful servant of the global corporatist agenda. I can't stand her. Wouldn't bother to say so, but I've seen too much defense of her on DU for some reason.
