Heard on All Things Considered
NPR's Michel Martin speaks with American University professor Allan Lichtman about the prediction he made two years ago that President Trump will be impeached.
Excerpt from the interview
LICHTMAN: It really hasn't. Right now, the onus is on the Democrats. This is their historical moment. As Shakespeare put it, the tide is at the flood. They're either going to seize the tide at the flood, or they're going to be washed away by history and be reviled as worse enablers of Donald Trump than even the Republicans.
This is not a time for timidity on the part of Democrats. This is a time for boldness. You have now 45% of the American people calling for impeachment. That's before the House votes any articles. That's before trial. That's higher than the percentage that wanted to see Richard Nixon impeached when they began the impeachment process against him.
So right now, I am very disappointed with the Democrats. They are making the same mistake Democrats always make - being too timid, playing not to lose. And that is a sure remedy for losing and a sure recipe for not doing your constitutional duty. The only way to hold this president accountable with real pain is through impeachment, which strikes at his power and his brand.

Allan Jay Lichtman is an American political historian who teaches at American University in Washington, D.C. He is well known for predicting most of the presidential winners in the United States Presidential Election since 1984, including forecasting the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election remarkably early. (9,090 posts)political leadership have no clue because democrats and liberals ignore it.
because the talk radio monopoly buzz machine is invisible, media and pundits can keep repeating the corporate idiocy about 'what the people want', which is basically just coming out of the asses of limbaugh and a few hundred ignorant racist putin-loving parrots

(3,344 posts)We have hundreds of former prosecutors signing a statement saying the president would be indicted if he were anyone else. There is nothing bold about starting an impeachment inquiry.

(24,122 posts)with my favorite candidate, Bernie, and where I often agree with my less favored candidates. Compare and contrast that with other candidates' supporters who ONLY criticize Bernie, CONSTANTLY... yet NEVER take issue with ANY position their favorite candidate has promoted.
Now with that said, there are those who claim that Bernie outright opposes impeachment, which, of course, is NOT true. Do I wish Bernie was MORE FORCEFUL in promoting impeachment of the Traitor-in-Chief and was fully on board to start impeachment proceedings now? Absolutely!
That's why on this issue, I much prefer Elizabeth's stance on impeaching Dolt45.

(14,489 posts)...... .... (because I think that recent approval poll is bullshit).
Professor Lichtman should further consider the fact that Repugs have billions of dollars and rubles behind defending this criminal in public and in courts, and that they practically own or yield control over most of our media.
Professor Lichtman is also wrong about the onus only being on our Democrats. The constitutional truth is the onus is on all of Congress, and that includes Republicans.
Democrats are not being timid, but instead are being precise and thorough and following our laws with due process.

(40,366 posts)Allan Lichtman is a professor of political science at American University who, with a colleague, developed a prediction model that successfully predicted every presidential election since 1984, including that of Donald Trump in 2016. But professor Lichtman also predicted that President Trump will be impeached.
