The president falsely claims that tariffs are paid directly to the U.S. Treasury by China and indicates these nonexistent Chinese funds will cover the subsidy cost. That would be an additional bill for U.S. taxpayers already shouldering the cost of increased tariffs in the form of higher costs for products and parts from China.
Trump revealed the subsidy figure in a tweet Friday. He suggested the government use the funds to buy agricultural products to ship to other nations for humanitarian aid, though setting up such a system would be extremely complicated. In his most recent budget proposal, Trump proposed eliminating three food aid programs, Politico noted.
The president appeared to dismiss the impact of the cost as he falsely claimed again that massive tariff payments are being paid by China directly to the U.S. Treasury, which would presumably be used to cover the cost of the subsidy. There is absolutely no need to rush to negotiate a deal with China, he tweeted.

EDITED TO ADD THIS STORY JUST SEEN ON CNN
FARMERS TURN AGAINST TRUMP'S TRADE WAR:
Farmers have long stood behind Trump's mission to get a better trade deal with Beijing that addresses long-standing issues with what they say are unfair trading practices.
But after weeks of optimistic statements by Trump and members of his administration about how trade talks were progressing, Trump abruptly escalated tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods last week and opened the door to even more -- prompting Beijing to hit back Monday by raising the tariff rate on $60 billion of US items.
The escalated tariffs don't hit agricultural products directly, since most were already facing a 25% tariff imposed by China last year. But the news still sent commodity prices plummeting.

(6,907 posts)They talk about tough times and how many farms could truly go BK but NEVER is the Trump name mentioned as the cause. If Obama had pulled this stunt there would be a blockade of DC by tractors and demanding Obama's head on a platter.
FUCKING HYPOCRITES!!

Everything Trump touches dies. Unfortunately, that's likely going to include the United States of America, even if we manage to get rid of this motherfucker.

(31,261 posts)If he is going to ask for another $15 billion to shore up farmers from his stupidity, then ship to food to American schools so that kids that can't pay for lunch aren't going hungry.
Trump is playing the most naked type of politics. Satisfy a key part of his base, while letting those his base see as undeserving suffer. The man is the most divisive president in this country's history, by far.

Here is what will likely happen. Family farms go bankrupt, big agribusiness gets a bailout, big agribusiness uses the bailout to buy foreclosed farms.
They voted for him. I have empathy but you get what you deserve sometimes.

(50,451 posts)When Democrats mention the possibility of raising taxes on the business community even slightly and even if it's for the best of reasons, Republicans are all "you can't do that. Don't you understand business at all? All business taxes are ultimately paid for by the consumer in the form of higher prices." (Which, of course, we already knew.)
When Trump whacks the business community with a tax increase that effectively repeals the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Trump's remaining fans are all "woo-hoo! MAGA! Best president ever! Repeal the 22nd Amendment so Trump can serve for life!"

(13,142 posts)The extra money China gives to our agricultural competitors is going to go into making them bigger, cheaper, stronger competitors. What's Trump going to do about that?
Trump is not giving farmers a plan. He's trying to buy them off.
