Jimmy Carter underwent surgery for a broken hip after falling at home in Georgia, his office says. He was leaving to go turkey hunting when he fell. President Carter said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week and he has not reached his limit, his office says.

(43,173 posts)Not that I can expect him to live forever (although the idea of the first centenarian president is within his grasp now), but I shudder to think about a nation where the most moral, ethical and upright man to ever hold the office is "eulogized" by the most unethical, immoral man to hold the office.

But, this type of injury for someone in their mid-90's has a high mortality rate.

(16,299 posts)I saw something somewhere that said there are classes that teach elderly people falling strategies. Research says they are very effective.

(33,310 posts)the hip's already broken. hopefully he has enough determination and muscle reserve to walk again. it's really hard at that age - my MIL never did.
wishing him the best, but he's probably not going turkey hunting anytime soon.

(10,828 posts)This is not the sort of injury you want to incur at Carter's age. He is amazingly active and sharp but falling like this, having a break often indicates frailty. Even when we don't want to admit it.
Hope he recovers. He's done such good work here and around the world!
