Congressman Calls For Steve Mnuchin To Be Jailed If He Doesnt Hand Over Trumps Tax Returns
Pascrell said on MSNBCs The Beat with Ari Melber, I believe that the Justice Department should first fine the two persons that were talking about, Mr. Mnuchin and Mr. Rettig. And I would increase the penalties. And by the way, if they say no all the way, then Id put them in jail all the way. Thats the law of the land. I dont want to act as judge and jury here, which the trump administration has done many times on. But Ill tell you what the law is. The law is on our side. And I cant wait.

Calls are growing for Trump officials to be jailed
Over the weekend, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) called for the jailing of Trump administration officials who are stonewalling investigations, We should consider the power of inherent contempt, an old doctrine that allows the Congress itself to issue a summons, arrest warrant to an official and demand they appear at a congressional hearing, be subject to fines, to jail time. I think we ought to explore contracting with area correctional institutions, provide additional support to the sergeant in arms, so the White House knows were serious.
House Democrats are running out of patience. The calls are getting louder from the Democratic caucus for stronger action to be taken. Fines are a good first step because we all know that Trump wont actually pay the fines of those who are covering for him. Democrats are building a strong case against this administration for widespread obstruction.
In order to get this administration to comply, Democrats will either need to win court cases or take action like the Congress members are suggesting.
It might be necessary for Democrats to lock them up.

(67,102 posts)Democrats IMO need to play really hard ball. Hoping the system works will not hack it, because republicans don't give a F about the country now, in the future or the people. They are in the political game for money and power. Lofty ideas about any in the GOP serving the country in politics for the preservation of a democracy and the future of the country/people are long gone. The GOP is now a bunch of thugs, just like the ass in the WH they idolize.

I realize this is a magnitude worse but, people are dumb.

(7,205 posts)There really is no jail in which to put them, and by "them" I mean "Republicans". My choice would be Washington's "Central Detention Facility" - a REAL jail, that is local and close by, used for the "locals" awaiting adjudication of their cases or are sentenced for misdemeanors. (Perfect.)
But the problem with using it is (sez' WaPo): We can fit a maximum of two people. - A sergeant with the Capitol Police.
Two!
So here is the theater: A member of the House should identify this sorrowful deficiency and propose as a solution - a bill that would fund and secure additional space at the DC jail! Just a few million dollars that the city could use, but enough to grab attention from those on the Reich. "Yo!! Mr. Barr, Mr. Mnuchin, Mr. Rettig, Mr. McGahn - plenty of room and we left the light on for 'ya!"
It won't go far, but can you imagine the heads exploding all over the National Republican Club? And the White House!!!!! It would be all over "Meet-the-Press", "This Week", "Face the Nation" - "Fox Sunday!" - and let's not leave out Sean Hannity's (aka, Client #3) and bloated, saggy-titted doom gorgon, Rush Limbaugh!

(2,041 posts)Even better if the proposition was something they could do with their internal budget, no need to jump the hurdles of passing a law, yes?
That would really get them excited

(296 posts)Simple concept---house finds someone in inherent contempt---has power thru sergeant of arms of House---Sergeant of Arms of both houses along with Architect of the Capitol control the Capitol Police. Capitol police have an offsite holding facility--when done in past--perp has been held in a hotel. No different then state police arresting a county sheriff. DO IT NOW ---Start with BARR--This will force the admin to go to court to get an injunction would be rapidly expedited to the supreme court. Power in Law---in the Constitution

(6,007 posts)Chris Matthews is one of the biggest. He always asks the Democrats who come on about who is going to go arrest him. Now, think about that for a minute. The level of his disbelief marks the level the elites mark their elitism. That is, in 1930 they actually arrested someone. Which means, back then, those people were considered normal people. That IS the law and they were not above it. They actually did it.
But now, a large group of people consider that time to have been primitive or something because they don't consider it in the realm of reality for "those" people to be arrested.
That's what it says to me. The level of their disbelief that this can happen, is the measure of their condescension to the elites who, apparently (and obviously), operate under a different legal system.

This White House, with this so-called pResident in charge, isnt expecting that. Gene Robinson had an outstanding column noting something of which we should stay very well aware. If you look at trumps private sector track record of doing business, you get a pretty clear picture of his modus operandi.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trump-has-no-idea-what-hes-doing/2019/05/13/a3e6a626-75c0-11e9-bd25-c989555e7766_story.html?utm_term=.0894d9a6baf6&wpisrc=nl_opinions&wpmm=1
Robinsons op/ed about trump vs China on the tariff mess pointed to the shtick trump typically pulled, bullying the little-guy contractor or subcontractor who didnt have the means or the time to respond or defy, much less mount a counterattack. You look at how trump has always done business. But China is NOT some little company run by some sole proprietor from Brooklyn. And the same template trump has always used DOES NOT work against a formidable and powerful opponent like China.
trump may assume his old tried-n-true strong-armed local bait n switch will apply across the board. It doesnt. And it wont, here, either.
TO JAIL with these schmucks! AND, ultimately, with HIM, too!!!
