that will help him get re-elected and also give him a good excuse to maybe duck debates with the Dem nominee. He also feels that the American People come to rally around the President if we're at war.
I don't know if this will work for Trump though.
What I question is - Do the American People want a war? - a war with Iran.
My guess is that 'we the people' are warred out. Thank you G.W.Bush & Co.
Also - will the American People really buy Trump's reasoning for conducting a war against Iran. He single-handedly killed Obama's efforts and deal he had with Iran. The other signature's on the treaty with Iran - still honor it.
Trump is a know liar. He's lying about Iran too.
And do the American People want any more of our soldiers to be deployed in another unnecessary war? Do they want to send their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, relatives to a sham of a war? Do they want any more money to be diverted to war efforts?
My guess is that the American People will soundly protest any war with Iran.
And if Trump continues to march down that path - that he will be doing so at his own peril. I don't think the American People will support him - know matter what kind of justification he provides - and I think it will cause him to lose in 2020.
What are your thoughts?

(7,605 posts)yellow ribbons, and the protestors against the war will be in harm's way. America loves its wars. We love to dictate to the rest of the world who will lead them and how to act. While we act like a bunch of loonies from Bumfuck, Tx.
You are right, walkingman.

(7,605 posts)I spent over 2 months (away from my family) at Camp Casey in Crawford when "W" started the Iraq War and saw a my hero Cindy Sheehan destroyed not only by Texas locals but also ignored pretty much by the national news media. She was right about it (Iraq)being a bogus war as were the Vietnam protestors in the late 60's. But it makes little difference - America loves its wars! We love being the bully of the world.

(15,642 posts)in all of this GW, tRump, the House 2010-2018, and the Senate. We are the majority in every frigging case. And by a significant margin with tRump, the Senate and the last House.
Whats our long-term strategy for dealing with this? Do we have one?

(53,410 posts)It seems like most of them have had multiple deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. The reason for multiple deployments hasnt been love of war. Its been lack of replenishment for the ranks.
And Iran is no primitive country like Afghanistan. It has a modern military with all the advantages our military have. And they havent been bogged down in un-winnable and exhausting wars like we have.
And most Americans are too aware that we havent won a war in a long time. Not even in a poor country like Afghanistan. War isnt as glamorous as when we win.

(25,242 posts)we need to conduct a 'call in to Congress' campaign and tell our elected representatives - Dem and Repug alike - that we don't want no stinking war. We can't wait until Trump starts sending troops - we have to nip it in the bud now.
I don't agree that the American People will rally around a war effort by Trump.
Yes - there as some - probably his base that will support him - but I think the bulk of the American People will object.
We need more of our elected Dems to get statements out - much like Bernie did today - against this war. We need to define the narrative and not let Trump lie us into another needless war where we put our soldiers and the country in general - in harms way.

(5,790 posts)Israel - WIN! BiiBi despised Obama because he wouldn't bomb the Iranian nuclear facilities; wouldn't give or sell him the bunker-busting bombs, and had the audacity to negotiate a peace deal. BiBi wants Iran bombed into submission - or extinction.
Saudi Arabia - WIN! MBS despises the Iranians and wants to remind the Islamic world that his kingdom is the center of the universe - not Teheran. This administration has already shown that they'll do anything from allowing journalists to be butchered to selling nuclear weapons to the Saudis.
China - WIN! Subduing Iran and controlling their oil sticks a thumb in the Chinese eye!
The base of older white voters - SUPER WIN! If an American is over 50, they probably have memories of our Embassy being seized and it's 52 staff members being held, hostage. DJs of the era played a novelty parody "Bomb Bomb Bomb; Bomb Bomb Iran" to the tune of the Beach Boys "Barbara Ann."White Christian Conservatives do not want peace with Iran. They want to see Tehran disappear in a mushroom cloud. The PNAC neocons (Bolton, et. al.) will spout the "we'll be greeted as liberators" line again. The vanquishing of Iran will be seen by neocons as 2/3 of the axis of evil being defeated.
Protestors will, as usual, be dismissed as "the loony left"; "socialists"; "Muslim sympathizers"; and "sufferers of Trump derangement syndrome."
To be sure, your point is taken. There will be protests, and the House will not back a war resolution. Trump will ignore the House, knowing the Senate will not remove him, and the SCOTUS will allow him to do whatever he wants. Trump better hope his victory is quick and the casualties are low, or else he will be second-guessed very quickly.
God help us all!
