Apparently it bounced off the runway after the first touchdown.

(18,770 posts)...it "ballooned" 3x with the last instance gaining 75-100 ft before stalling and smashing into the tarmac. The bigger question is, why did they come in so hot?

(44,972 posts)So they were returning to the airport and the plane was too heavy because it had a lot of fuel. Plane being too heavy sounds to be the reason for pilots not being able to control the landing and the plane bouncing and catching on fire.

They should have gone around on the first bounce. If the plane wants to fly, forcing it on the ground is a bad idea and can lead to porpoising seen in the video.
The plane lost its autopilot from the lightning strike. I assume part of that loss would include the auto-throttles that pilots rely on to set their speed up on approach.
Coupled with the fact other fly by wire systems were disabled, it was all on the pilots to hand fly the landing.
