My mom raised 3 kids alone from the time I was 3 - I remember the 4 of us huddling under a blanket in the same bed because we couldn't pay the electric bill, neighbors leaving boxes of food at our door for us, getting a little ticket at school every day for my free lunch.

If you think it's an insult to be thought of as a welfare recipient, guess what? You have fully bought into the Republican meme.

Thanks for thinking so highly of my mom (now an anthropology professor), my brother (a police chief), my sister (a trauma nurse - RN), and me (retired and disabled Army combat veteran, also recently published author).

I count myself fortunate now, but there was a time when my daughters were very young that I was single, homeless and carless after I lost my job. We finally got a small apt and I took the kids to school on a bus every day, then went back and picked them up. Thank god for food stamps and kind and generous people. It's not an insult at all - and you should be very proud of your mother for what she did - and for raising such accomplished children.
