Lynyrd Skynyrd Supports Romney???? WTF!

Say it ain't so!!!!!!

Lynyrd Skynyrd Cancels RNC Concert; Journey Performing at Romney Fundraiser

Monday, August 27, 2012

Lynyrd Skynyrd was supposed to perform a special concert Sunday in Tampa, Florida, ahead of the Republican National Convention, but the band pulled the plug on the show at virtually the last minute.

Skynyrd cancelled the concert as a precautionary measure due to Tropical Storm Isaac. A statement obtained by The Huffington Post from singer Johnny Van Zant reads, "We were excited to be participating in the Republican National Convention and the Liberty Plaza concert. With the weather conditions unknown and for the safety of our fans and friends, it is best to cancel the show and not put anyone in harm's way."

I know it's asking for a lot, but does anyone else remember that discussion here on DU?

there is a big difference between dead rock stars and old burned out stars is they never change their values. That's why people like Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin are so popular. They never became old, rich, burned out bitter rock stars. Same goes for the most of Skynyrd. Charlie Daniels on the other hand... not so much

Gary Rossington and Rickey Medlocke and Medlocke is not really truely orignal but he joined in the 70's. Its very possible the all the new members are right wingers. I saw them last year and the songs they played from the new album were chocked full of right wing crap.

Republicans and proud rednecks.

That is a racist song.

From their song Red White and Blue about 10 years ago:

My Daddy worked hard, and so have I,
paid our taxes and gave our lives
to serve this great country
so what are they complaining about

Yeah we love our families, we love our kids
you know it is love that makes us all so rich
That's where were at,
If they don't like it they can just
get the HELL out!

I heard a lot of that love it or leave it crap in the 60s.

Admittedly, I was a big fan of theirs in my younger days. I can still appreciate the music. Though I don't recall any band members being very political, being southern and a redneck favorite Im not surprised they support the GOP like many others in the south and even I used to.

Today's Lynyrd Skynyrd is nothing more than a tribute band. Gary Rossington is the only original member as everyone else is either dead or have quit.

In 1975, Van Zant said: "The lyrics about the governor of Alabama were misunderstood. The general public didn't notice the words 'Boo! Boo! Boo!' after that particular line, and the media picked up only on the reference to the people loving the governor."[4] "The line 'We all did what we could do' is sort of ambiguous," Al Kooper notes. "'We tried to get Wallace out of there' is how I always thought of it."[4] Journalist Al Swenson argues that the song is more complex than it is sometimes given credit for, suggesting that it only looks like an endorsement of Wallace.[4] "Wallace and I have very little in common," Van Zant himself said, "I don't like what he says about colored people."[4]
Music historians examining the juxtaposition of invoking Nixon and Watergate after Wallace and Birmingham note that one reading of the lyrics is an "attack against the liberals who were so outraged at Nixon's conduct" while others interpret it regionally "the band was speaking for the entire South, saying to northerners, we're not judging you as ordinary citizens for the failures of your leaders in Watergate; don't judge all of us as individuals for the racial problems of southern society".[3]

That verse was written to get the states who voted for Nixon to do some self reflection; it is as unfair to blame everyone in the south for Wallace as it is to blame everyone in California for Nixon.

right here on DU:

"The lyrics about the governor of Alabama were misunderstood. The general public didn't notice the words 'Boo! Boo! Boo!' after that particular line, and the media picked up only on the reference to the people loving the governor."

That statement and other members here noting the band's support for President Carter.

But as others have reminded me today, this is NOT the same band (three of the original members having been killed in the plane crash).

There's also the verse celebrating Muscle Shoals - one of the earliest music production studios to be integrated, and one that hosted dozens of black recording artists in rural Alabama. And, as someone posted downthread, there's "The Ballad of Curtis Loew." Southern identity is complex, and while Southern pride can be shorthand for 'racist', it isn't always, and in the case of Skynyrd, there's plenty of evidence that they weren't.

The current lineup is a different story. But it's a totally different band.

We are after all talking about a band who named themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd to mock a gym teacher of theirs (Leonard Skinner) who used to constantly harass them about their long hair, which back in the late 60's in the deep south was not as common as in other parts of the country. Im sure they were called "hippie" a time or two.

From Glide Magazine by Ross Warner:

"However, the band had serious reservations about the label they were tagged with. Particularly troubling was the Confederate flag that often hung behind the stage. In 1975, Van Zant mused, “That was strictly an MCA gimmick to start us off with some label. It was useful at first, but by now it’s embarrassing except in Europe, where they really like all that stuff because they think it’s macho American.” The “stars and bars” that eventually began popping up in the band’s crowds became more than embarrassing. It was bad enough to be portrayed as ignorant hayseeds. It was entirely another to be categorized as racist."
