The child was skipping rocks at the zoo. Now a flamingo is dead.A child struck a flamingo with a rock at an Illinois zoo, injuring it severely enough that staff determined the bird should be euthanized.
The child was skipping rocks into the birds habitat on Monday when one struck the animal, Jay Tetzloff, the director at the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, Ill., said in an email.
Unfortunately, staff determined the best course of action given the animals injuries was to euthanize the bird, he said. This was a truly unfortunate accident, and we are working with the juveniles family to move forward.
He declined to provide the age of the child when asked.
The story was first reported by the Pantagraph, which said that the birds leg was broken.

(5,268 posts)3. Both at our Arboretum and Nature Center I have seen children throwing rocks at wildlife
and their parents did nothing to stop them. At two different places recently I saw kids deliberately throw rocks trying to hit trout at one place and turtles in pond at another place. At one of the places where fishing is prohibited a father and son were trying to catch fish from a protected habitat and I warned them that they were violating the regulations there.
