Michigan ordered a new map by independent committee on a ballot initiative. Why is this even in front of SCOTUS? it is a state issue.

Voting rights/redistricting cases aren't considered state issues for jurisdictional purposes because they deal with constitutional questions.

The voters took district drawing away from the legislature. So there is no point in SCOTUS or any other court ordering the legislature to redraw the districts. But the case for OH and NC definitely needs to go forward.

And they'll delay considering the case until it's too late to draw new maps, then they'll say, "Yeah, this is pretty egregious gerrymandering. The next state legislature elected in Ohio and Michigan are charged with drawing up new maps, but the 2020 election will take place using the old maps." And hey, whaddya know? The new map drawn by a gerrymandered Republican majority will be just as bad or worse. So the citizens will sue, the court will say it's horribly unfair, the appeals will follow, and it will get to the Supremes just in time for them to delay a ruling that the new map is as unconstitutional as the old map. But it'll be too late to draw a fair map in time for the 2022 election, so . . .

And so on, and so forth.

SCOTUS told the Repukes to pound salt, they weren't going to hear their appeal. That's when then Repukes tried to delay unnecessarily last year, and they had already lost in the PA Supreme Court. They tried to use the SCOTUS for more appeals/delays and it didn't happen.

We got a quick decision and there was still plenty of time to enact the new map before the November 2018 elections.

or didn't vote in 2016.

Two seats in the SCOTUS. Gone.

Gerrymandering may be just fine by this court. In any event we have to wait for the decision now... which could be after the next election. Holding onto the House just became that much harder.
