This is concerning a post earlier which said Republicans are the White Party and Democrats are the

Black Party. I work in a Steel Mill in Eastern Ohio and about 6 years ago a Head Roller on a large Tandem Mill named Gary looked upset. I said what's wrong he said he was mad because he had "a Canadian" on his crew. I said Canadian what are you talking about he then nodded towards Craig a young Black guy and said him. I said what is this Canadian shit he said I can't call him a Nigger now can I, I just walked away. Well about 3 years later and it was caught on camera Craig pulled out of the Plant parking lot doubled back came back in the parking lot drove towards Gary. Craig pulled away just in time Gary jumped back out of the way didn't get hurt. Well Craig only had 6 years in the Mill. Gary a staunch Republican I remember now had told me in 2000 Al Gore was a child molester in 2004 said John Kerry was a Pedifile, that was the word he used he had heard from someone, had 38 years seniority. Craig who has 2 young children got fired. The USWA tried to save his job but the local media WTOV in Steubenville Ohio somehow got ahold of the tape and actually broadcasted it on the 6:00 News. Gary was on a last chance because of previous incidences he had with white guys as well black guys, anyway the Union, Company and his wife I heard made him take an early retirement. What Craig did was wrong but he was provoked to the point where he lost his $220 a day job. Then a couple of years ago a guy I work with said I see we have "a Canadian" for a craneman it was a black guy who was a craneman. Turns out Canadian was code for a Nigger in the Mill I hate to say. That guy that said that is also a Republican as it turned out. Not saying all Republicans are that way 2 of my sisters are Republicans and I have never heard them use that word ever.

night of the 2008 elections. I was told this by a white guy and a black female who drove tier lift who was working that night. She told me she was happy Obama won but the things Gary was saying over the loudspeaker was aweful she said. But she didn't report him, she just kept her mouth shut for those 8 hours and went on and did her job.

They had a huge meeting one morning to tell us all that we would not be excused from work without a doctors note or an accident report. Not one day. If we didn't have one of those documents to bring in with us, do not bother coming back to work.

So one day I needed a day off. I had no note, so I just showed up about 6 days later on payday to pick up my check.

"Hey, you!" Says the manager, all smiles, "Where have you been? When are you coming back to work?"

Genuinely confused, I recount what was said at the meeting.

Ducking in low and close so I can hear him whisper, "I know, I know, but that was mostly for the . . uh. . . black employees - ya know?"

Made my skin crawl.

I guess I was totally naive, but where I was raised (on the great plains) even if somebody was dumb enough to think that way, nobody would have dared said anything like that out loud to a mere acquaintance.

Not saying we didn't have racists. Not saying we didn't know we had racists. Just saying that around home people seemed to have the good sense and ability to understand that common decency required that they keep that shit to themselves. In other words, they at least knew that they were supposed to be ashamed of it.

That also seems to be what is falling away in the general public discourse. They no longer seem to understand that they should be ashamed of being racists.
