@DanRather
We have a president of the United States wink at a murderous dictator to mock a former vice president? As what? A campaign surrogate for 2020? This is despicable in too many ways to count.

(32,017 posts)Treason is also the only crime specifically enumerated in the Constitution. The penalty for treason is death, and that is why the Supreme Court could not rule that the death penalty is unconstitutional. Its actually spelled out in the Constitution as a penalty for treason (but only for treason). Still, the death penalty must be constitutional, our justices ruled, because its actually proscribed in the Constitution as the appropriate penalty for treason.

(16,113 posts)As I said, many people define treason as "people I don't like doing things I don't like".

(25,467 posts)because treason of the "aid and comfort to our enemies" variety requires an enemy, usually a declared one, and we're not at war with Russia.
That's also covered in the Constitution.

(81,220 posts)depending on how you define war in the first quarter of the 21st century. If you're talking about conventional bang-bang/boom-boom/rockets-red-glare/heavy artillery kind of war, then okay.
But if you're talking about WHAT HAPPENED HERE, cyber-warfare that actually could be described as staging a coup, as we'll probably see war evolve toward (if indeed it's not already underway), then it certainly fit the parameters of treason.
He's a freakin' TRAITOR, at the very least.
Depends on how you define "war."
TwilightZone
(25,467 posts)We're not at war with Russia, officially or otherwise. An attempt to hack our elections doesn't fit the definition, even if stretched to its limit. The definition is (intentionally, as designed by the founders) incredibly narrow.
Here's a good explanation of the narrow scope of treason and why it almost never applies. If the Cold War didn't fit the definition, the current situation certainly doesn't.

(23,002 posts)Just like how they deal w primadonnas in a business, that is past their expiry date, and is now dangerous for the company...erm..country. The first thing that comes to mind is a "golden parachute/retirement" angle. Warms folks up to leaving, and gives them (in their minds) an honorable way out. How they do it in the corporate world, whatever that looks like. Bc lets face it, this is just corporate America, installed as a president. Time to resign don.

(118,622 posts)replicans because they make 37% of the electorate or 84% of the republicans. That being said republicans own all of the policies Trump puts forward with the exception of foreign policy and trade. So they are like a couple of crabs stuck on each other. One of them will lose a claw some day. But it has not happened yet. I'm with Pelosi. They need to be voted out.

THAT is the gold standard for election integrity.
There are now machines using a bar code for tallying, and the vote is more easily tampered with.

(23,002 posts)won't have to reckon with their own foolishness in regard to trump. Then i think to myself. Stop it. I DONT CARE WHAT HIS MILLIONS(?) OF PEOPLE WILL DO W THEMSELVES. They need to start dealing in reality. It's always THEM as a variable in our algebra. WHY? They never do stuff in deference to us. Impeach now. It just needs to happen. Let's go damn it.
Grasswire2
(13,568 posts)So I don't understand the fear that impeachment will drive more support to him in 2020.
There is no center any more-- no voters will be driven to him if his crimes are openly and clearly explained to the American people.

(5,275 posts)This Orange Creep is dropping any kind of pretense, aligning and buddying up with brutal dictators, to now I guess pardoning right wing psychopaths.
There are comfortably more of us than them. But because of the idiotic Electoral College, the inequities of the Senate where 35 % of the population controls 70% of the Senate, And gerrymandering we are in grave danger of a long dark period. A man who lost by 3 million votes is bringing us to a real danger point.....with the complicity of the Senate and Social Media.
The Courts are so far pushing back, some State Authorities And Courts are pushing back but in the end who is going to force this would be Authoritarian to comply with anything?
If somehow we get back to some kind of normal we need to name McConnell as perp #2.
In 2020 show up and vote, vote all the way down the ballot to school commissioners, it matters. We must play both the short game and the long game.
