A Facebook Inc. executive told CNN the company wouldnt remove a manipulated video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, stating that theres no policy that says content on the social-networking website must be accurate.
The video shows Pelosi appearing to slur her words and stammer, as if drunk or mentally incapacitated. In reality, someone had taken a clip of Pelosi, in which her speech was normal, and altered its speed and the tone of her voice to create the effect. Trump on Thursday shared with his 60 million Twitter followers a separate clip from Fox Business Network in which comments from Pelosi at a press conference had been edited to give the impression she was in mental decline. The president added the all-caps notation, Pelosi stammers through news conference.
If its misinformation related to safety, we can and we do remove it, said Monika Bickert, a Facebook vice president for product policy and counterterrorism in an interview with CNN host Anderson Cooper.
But when were talking about political discourse and misinformation around that, we think the right approach is to let people make an informed choice and to work with independent fact-checkers to attach warning labels on suspect content, Bickert said. We think its important for people to make their own informed choice about what to believe, she added.

(10,008 posts)It is a shame my local LWV and Indivisible use FB as a platform to get information out. I will miss that aspect. Will not much miss seeing more prom and graduation pictures of former schoolmates' and neighbors' kids I have never met.

(1,642 posts)It seems to me that they know it's wrong to have such a slanderous fake video of a real person. But, they choose wrong anyway.
Hey, if you want a reason to vote for Warren, she's offered to break these guys up.
I think they need killin' as a friend of mine used to say.

(22,100 posts)computer related technology can wrought (distort images, speech, etc.), and thus, are on guard against obviously tailored videos. Anyone that knows the people well enough being 'mocked, etc.' already know that this isn't reality (the video).
FB should have reacted more positively than what they did, but they didn't. Another reason to ditch them (I've never belonged to FB, never will either, as I don't feel like a platform w/ my life story etc. on it is anyone else's business.). This does make me nervous (barely) in that they acknowledged problems in the past (w/ the 2016 elections and the fake videos/postings in efforts to distort our elections by the Russians), they are NOT continuing these efforts.

(19,022 posts)The technology has advanced far enough and is ant to be unleashed in the voters in this country. They can create anything they want now. Video of a speech with an opponent saying things they didnt say will be produced and used by the Right.
Dems have to be prepared for this right now or things like this could decide the election.
This wasnt the first time theyve used doctored video, this is just starting. And although this I was debunked easily, know that there are millions of Americans who still think its a real video.
