This is not meant to trash anyone or draw equivalencies. Just an observation about the realities of contemporary American politics.
Democrats don't need to be liberal to be worth voting for. We are very liberal relative to the opposition. There may be more room between the parties today than at any time since WWII, though due entirely to the RW moving further right. And that means more reason to vote for Democrats than ever.
There are lines in the sand that we will not let the Republicans cross. We are being admirably firm and tough these days.
Unfortunately, the lines are miles inside our own territory! We are like Errol Flynn having been sword-fought back to the edge of the castle wall. There is literally no room for us to retreat. Stand our ground here, or take a 200 foot plunge into the moat.
We are standing firm for the rape exception to an abortion ban. But that whole idea is a RW notion. An abortion ban is supposed to be unconstitutional.
We are standing up for ourselves on welfare reform. How dare anyone say that we would weaken the work requirements! We would never do such a thing.
We are standing firm on science. Global warming is real. We are not standing firm on any solution, of course. Too controversial. But at least we are standing firm on the thing conceptually. We are standing firm on geography (Kenya is not Hawaii), and probably on some simple arithmetic.
We are standing firm on getting rid of some of the Bush tax cuts and standing firm on keeping the rest. I support that, but it's ironic.
We are standing firm on making tough cuts to entitlement programs rather than eliminating them entirely.
And I expect we will stand firm against re-instituting the gold standard.
It is good to be bold and resolute. I am enjoying it, and am all for it.
But when we look at where the line in the sand is drawn... how far we had to go to find the sweet-spot of popular support... yeah this is a pretty conservative country.
