It's not just the US. Trump is just a small part of the equation. Look at what's happening all around the world. Go to England where Brexit is fucking things up and they're trying to vote to continue it. Then look at countries like Brazil, France, Poland, Hungary, Italy where fascism and white supremacy are on the rise and people are preferring fascist dictators to those who prefer democracy and rule of law.
Trump can't say that there's no collusion when collusion is happening all over the world. It's Hitler's master plan on a global scale. And as John Oliver pointed out, nothing good ever happens when you add the phrase "on a global scale" to anything.
But what can be done to stop it? Any time we attempt to talk about something being done they scream and cry that they are being censored because they are conservative.
We need to do something about this. Countries don't know what to do because they have never seen anything like this. The goal is complete and total chaos. And they're succeeding. Unfortunately by the time we stand up to this madness it may be too late to do anything about it.

(54,302 posts)My father-in-law was drafted into the military at age 17, and sent to Stalingrad. The only farm boy in his unit, all the city boys froze to death. As he lay with a leg severed by a blast from a Soviet artillery shell, a retreating unit noticed he was still alive and saved him. Returning to his farm a cripple at age 18, you can imagine that he was a confirmed pacifist for the rest of his life. So were his children. But the one surviving child of his (my wife) is now 67, and our children have never seen war. My younger daughter spent some time with the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone, and knows as well what supposedly normal people can become if involved in a war.
Europe in the post-war (and even that means different things to different people) era is composed of people who have very open minds and very closed minds. To people who live in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia, "post war" means post 1999. The organized crime gangs from there, many of whom operate here in the west, bring the war-hardened brutality with them. So do many recent veterans of fighting in Syria now living here. This continent remains anything but homogeneous.

I know it feels like we are all being flushed down the toilet - but we have to remember there are more good people here than bad !! We can fix this but we have to do it together.

The media helped get Trump elected (along with Comey and "social media" as well, so they can get rid of this monster before they're jailed and executed by Trump's fascist regime.

(65 posts)In WW2 we stamped down facism but did not extinguish it. It's coming back and with the problems of overpopulation and the crisis of people fleeing war in the middle East and Africa Europe has had a resurgence in racism and religious intolerance. I don't think it will get better anytime soon. And now in America Trump has turned up the hate of the other. Welcome to the Fourth Reich.

(19,963 posts)My theory is that mainly the spread of the Internet has allowed far more people in the Third World to discover what life is like in the First World. Many are deciding to attempt the shortcut to a better future. Realistically, Europe isn't that big and simply won't hold half of Africa and the Middle East; they have to draw the line somewhere. Italy backs Salvini and Hungary backs Orban because they're the ones drawing a hard line against taking in more migrants. Workers in Europe, U.K., and the U.S. don't want the competition for jobs depressing wages, and still a lot of white supremacist bigots in all three. Selfish far right parties including Dumpublicans are capitalizing big time on the migrant issue and bigotry and that could continue for some time.

(1,062 posts)Here's a fun read somewhat in line with your concerns. It won't alleviate those concerns but it might explain our odd situation here at the start of the 21st Century.
Sort Answer: ... civilizations such as the one we are currently experiencing on a "global scale" of advanced technology in the hands of a population of sentient beings (but not terribly wise beings) eliminate themselves in a slow or fast cataclysmic event of stupendous proportions (climate change perpetrated by all the crap we've put in the air; the elimination of floral and fauna we need for existence combined with overpopulation; mass exodus from disaster-prone areas into fearful alarmed other regions; war, particularly nuclear war; or perhaps just a stray comet.)
So, the stupid we are watching now may simply be us moving into the great filter, or should I call it 'filtration system'?

The left is not universally blameless in the rise of the extremist right. The European left and the Latin American left, especially, have been plagued by corruption, complacency and an addiction to bureaucracy that have disgusted enough of their former followers to turn to the extremist right in desperation. There is a reason the German Social Democrats went from holding the Chancellor's seat in 1998 to a humiliating 15% in the European Parliamentary elections that closed yesterday.

(54,302 posts)Yes, the EU is a bloated, corrupt bureaucratic nightmare, but it needs to be fixed, not abandoned.
When the Danes joined, the EU told them their apples were too small to be called apples. They told they EU, if THIS is what you're all about, we are not interested after all. The EU stopped the foolishness, and the Danes remained.

(4,723 posts)Is that not what we are seeing with the return of the extreme right? We have powerful people who cant get enough power, manipulating people's hate and fear to gain more power. The people they dupe get nothing. There are plenty of political parties in the world that would make their lives better, but too many people would rather hate than thrive.

(14,272 posts)Technology is advancing so rapidly that people feel like they can't keep up. Values and ideas are evolving rapidly and a large segment of the world is clinging to a mythical past where they take comfort in pretending they have a semblance of control. The planet is changing and our very existence is threatened and that is too horrible of a reality to contemplate.
People who are fearful would rather follow a self assured strong man idiot echoing their beliefs rather than listen to experts who advise them about things that conflict with their belief system.
