General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was in a casino in Iowa last night.
I was at a Blackjack table with 5 other players. The talk was about the servicemen and women. The dealer said that her son was a Marine and he has been in since Obama was President. Some guy at the other end of the table said that Obama was terrible man and that he never served his country in the military. She said that her son thought that Obama was a great man was an honorable president. The guy said that it wasn't right for Obama be president without being in the military anyway. Than dealer asked the guy if he was a Trumper? He said yes he was. She said to him "you know that both Trump or VP Pence never served in the military"? The guy said that he did not care, Trump knew what he was doing? At that point, another man setting at the table said that he was republican, served in the Iraq War and under Obama's command. He said Obama was a good man and a good president. He went on to say, Trump was selling out the country and told the guy, "if you can't see that, you are a fool"! The guy got mad, cashed out and left the table. We all laughed and keep playing.

(27,800 posts)You could make a lame argument that Bush was sort of IN the military, but Gore and Kerry both WENT to Vietnam, and got nothing but scorn for their service. Remember the Purple Heart bandaids at the 2004 RNC?

(73 posts)The draft ended in 1973, so Obama didn't HAVE to serve. And I'll give Pence the pass on that too. But the cheeto has NO excuse except he probably wouldn't have been mentally fit to serve.

(5,524 posts)The age difference makes the comparison even worse. Trump came up at a time where he should have been required to serve and he took active measures to avoid it. Obama came up at a time that made no such demands on young men.

I play a good bit of poker, and whenever table talk to turns to politics, it is railing on the evil liberal/puffing up republican fuck wittery 9 out of 10 times.
My poker club I am in, me and my buddy who got me into it, are probably the only non-cons.

(52,164 posts)even the dealers root for the players because they get bigger tips when players win.
poker is the one game where you're really playing against other players, so there's some incentive to needle other players and "put them on tilt" so they play poorly. wearing a maga hat and talking politics is one way to do that. i've seen it work, too.
mrs. unblock gets into it with them, but i just ignore them and focus on my game. we both do enjoy it when they bust out, though

(220 posts)and see who was the next person in line after it accepted or granted his deferment. Then track down that person and get a life history. In fact they should probably try to follow up on the next 10 people or so because all of them would have been bumped up and their life changed because of Trump's deferments. It would be a hell of a lot of work for a reporter, but those guys can do amazing things. And it would be one hell of a story if one of those draftees name is on the Memorial Wall in Washington.
I have a son in law that worked for an affiliate of NPR in Ok. until his outstanding work was noticed by The Center for Public Integrity which recruited him and offered him a job which he accepted and is now living and working in DC. He certainly has a fertile field to investigate lack of Public Integrity. I expect great things from him.

Next is Romney. Hes got a good head for numbers. Lets make him a logistician.
Hillary is a no-brainer; staff judge advocate.
Then comes Trump...laundry and bath specialist. The bus to Fort Lee is right over there.
