NY Tenants Fight As Landlords Embrace Facial Recognition

More than 130 residents at a Brooklyn apartment complex oppose plan to use the cameras, whose use, experts say, is quietly expanding in cities

The row, which the tenants believe could become an important test case, comes as concern about the spread of facial recognition systems has grown across the US and globally, with law enforcement agencies increasingly relying on the tool.

“We do not want to be tagged like animals,” said Icemae Downes, who has lived at Atlantic Plaza Towers since it opened 51 years ago. “We are not animals. We should be able to freely come in and out of our development without you tracking every movement.”

only the negative side of the transaction, what about the positive side, where if someone gets mugged or attacked, then cameras have caught that activity and thus footage can be provided to the police / authorities to apprehend suspects.

They are not in every building or car. Unless others are in a building or car AND they turn their cell phone camera on. The same goes for every road and street.

It's about using facial recognition to enter the building, instead of keys or some other method. The cameras will be connected to computers and will open the door only if the facial recognition software recognizes the person as someone who lives in the building.

Facial recognition software is not foolproof. People are not objecting to typical security cameras here. They're objecting to computer software determining whether they can enter their own home or not.
