Trump supporter admits she was surprised to learn Muellers report didnt actually exonerate the president
By Brad Reed - May 30, 2019
A supporter of President Donald Trump admitted this week she was surprised to learn that special counsel Robert Muellers report did not exonerate the president.
In an interview with NBC News, Michigan Trump voter Cathy Garnaat said that she went to Rep. Justin Amashs (R-MI) town hall this week to challenge his view that Trump should be impeached and she got caught off guard when he directly quoted from the Mueller report to justify his views.
I was surprised to hear there was anything negative in the Mueller report at all about President Trump, she admitted. I hadnt heard that before.
Garnaat went on to explain that none of the news shows she watches or listens to have ever gone into depth about the contents of the Mueller report.

(9,090 posts)this shit. limbaugh has led 1500 radio stations building the case for the "deep state coup", probably with help from the kremlin. once in while he gets hit back for something racist or misogynist but the attacks on dems like AOC or michael mann (climate) generate death threats and their supporters have no clue don't get their backs. the threats on aoc are heavy now and limbauigh made up a silly pretext that dem leadership would get rid of her to be able to say dems would "take her out", repeating that phrase on 600 radio stations, and now she's getting heavy death threats.
and dems nor media don't even poll for talk radio even though it's the main reason we're in this mess

(13,869 posts)I don't think many people listed to Rush anymore.
There was a small article on a local TV station website about a restaurant that had half of their space dedicated as a "Rush Room" so blue collar lunch patrons and old folks could listen to Rush during lunch. They checked and found out it had been abandoned years ago. When asked what prompted them to end the practice, which they had started during the Clinton presidency, the owner said it was simply lack of interest. He said fewer and fewer people wanted to listen, and he was getting more people that complained about it.

(24,412 posts)I don't think as many people have paid attention to him much since then (and it was probably hard to find things to rant about with Bush Jr. and Cheney as POTUS). Plus, he's lost advertisers over the years, esp. when he went on that crazy jag about Sandra Fluke and birth control coverage a few years ago.

(82,849 posts)Notice I did NOT say "reach out to." Hold town halls and rallies, get information in front of people that isn't filtered by Fox or hate radio. Yeah, it's fun hosting a big ol' rally in a friendly venue, but for every one of those, Democrats should be holding two or three rallies in hostile territory.

(13,869 posts)I watched an episode of "1969" the other night (it's an ABC docu-series of several shows about that pivotal year in America) on The FBI and the Black Panthers. Their founder, Fred Hampton, required the early members of the Panthers to attend church services in their neighborhoods. He said the mainly older and conservative folks in the pews were naturally resistant to their calls for resistance to the police and use of violence if necessary to protect themselves, and they needed to see who the Panthers were and hear about their outreach programs in the communities. Most churches became very supportive, especially of things like the before school breakfast programs, and it went a long way towards bringing the general population around to supporting the Panthers.
I think there is a parallel here to engaging the brainwashed masses by telling them what the Left supports, such as feeding the hungry and taking care of the poor. Put Progressive programs in that light and most people will have a hard time falling for the "socialism is going to be the downfall of the USA" line that the right has been pushing for years.

(82,849 posts)But Democrats don't have to pick up every last Trump dead-ender. If we peel off a few percentage points of support in the "safe" areas, we can do mighty things. Republican strategists might notice a drop in Trump's approval ratings from 78% to 75% in one of those areas, but will they recognize it for what it is? Will they be able to persuade Trump that there's something significant going on here besides a within-the-margin-of-error float? If they have to spend time and money shoring up those safe areas, that's less of each of those commodities to be spent in true battleground areas.

(23,002 posts)Sorry, but, anyone who didn't know that is wilfully ignoring the obvious. This 'surprise epiphany' is the easy way out, for people who just liked being a thorn in everyones side. Either that, or something trump did has started to effect their pocketbook. Grocery bill going up? Sounds like to me.

(15,805 posts)of other brainwashed Foxnonsense viewers. There's an old adage that says the truth shall set them free, but how do you get a disinterested American public, let alone rightwing media addicts, to hear it.
To start, begin an impeachment inquiry. That doesn't mean we're going to impeach Trump immediately, but we have an obligation to bring out the evidence and follow the facts to uncover the truth. That information will ever penetrate the Fox noise filters and people will see for themselves what treachery Trump has done in their name.
Impeachment is the only way to restore the dignity and solemn gravitas of the presidency. Impeachment is the only way to reclaim the First Amendment powers of the Congress as the Constitutional deterent to a lawless president, and stop the executive's overreach and abuse of power.

(4,544 posts)was by going to a town hall held by her REPUBLICAN Congressman, someone she trusted.
We are not going to enlighten others like her by holding town halls with Democrats. They won't attend, and if they do, they will simply see it as lies.
It also isn't going to matter if there are televised impeachment hearings because IF they see them, it will be on FOX News, and their views will be tempered by the FOX commentators.
Her viewpoint was changed because someone she already knew and trusted took the time to explain it in a public forum. That was something rare.
So, I don't think we are going to reach them UNLESS more Republicans start doing what Amash is doing (which impeachment hearings might help with, but it's still a long shot) and/or FOX News changes it's tune (unlikely unless hell freezes over).
They are only going to accept the truth AS the truth when presented to them by someone they see as one of their own and trust to be telling them the truth. WE can't make this happen, but we can work to create the conditions where it could happen, and hope it does.
I have to agree that it was encouraging to see that the bubble CAN be broken, the scales CAN fall from their eyes.

(21,129 posts)She was surprised to learn. She hadn't heard about it before.
I submit, she is a probably an OK person with a lot on her plate. She doesn't have time to prioritize political research. She believes sources that SHOULD be reliable are reliable. She has no immediate reason to doubt it. She hears things, they get filed away. The world turns and life happens.
News SHOULD be reliable.
The U.S. Attorney General SHOULD be reliable.
The President of the United States SHOULD be reliable.
The President's Press Secretary SHOULD be reliable.
We can blame her and people like her, and perhaps rightfully so. I think the lion's share of the blame rests elsewhere. We need to blame how busy life is, anymore. I think we need to blame the prevalence of propaganda is in our media. (Arguably, we can blame Reagan for both of these.)
So how do we fix it?
