Judge: Lawsuit over Georgia voting issues can move forward

ATLANTA (AP) — A judge says a legal challenge against Georgia's election system from a group founded by former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams can move forward.

The federal lawsuit was filed in November, weeks after Abrams narrowly lost to Republican Brian Kemp in an election that drew national attention.

During the campaign, Abrams and her allies accused Kemp of voter suppression. Kemp was the state's top elections official at the time. He vehemently denied the allegations.

The lawsuit alleges Georgia election officials mismanaged the 2018 election and deprived some citizens of their constitutional right to vote.

U.S. District Judge Steve Jones on Thursday rejected a request by state officials to dismiss the lawsuit.

He wrote that a recently passed law amending some of the state's election processes doesn't make the lawsuit irrelevant.
