(112 posts)John Mitchell went to jail. Barr is following a similar path

(112 posts)Unless there is a blanket pardon from Trump before he leaves office, all of his toadies that played a role in coverup can be prosecuted.
Mitchell was among 7 Nixon Administration officials indicted for conspiracy to coverup Watergate crimes.

(112 posts)Take politics out of DOJ. Federal prosecutors will follow the evidence and, if warranted, prosecute former government officials for wrongdoing.
Other countries have jailed former presidents for corruption. Even Israel has jailed a former prime minister, and about to do same with the current one.

(12,344 posts)We could have the most insulated, apolitical investigation in history and the right will still insist it's a witch hunt. Even worse, if they ever got back into power after that, they will start finding liberal witches everywhere.
I wish I knew what to do about that.

There are also things beyond their control and the future is defiantly one of them.

(756 posts)How much can you bend twist and contort the law before they take away your priveledge to practice law? Have we established a pattern of obstruction of justice yet? Is not lying to Congress, taking Mueller's report to the White House, and lying with intent to deceive the people enough?

(23,213 posts)Take Barr down and put him in deep-fry stir. Put in a *REAL* A.G. and do PROPER investigations. Then let the other "dominoes" fall as they may!

(67,104 posts)watching Barr on CBS he reminded me of Cheney. The ponderous attitude, sometimes downcast eyes in a posture of gravitas. Not to mention being overdressed and sitting before a burning fire. (yes I do know he is in Alaska, but he wasn't on the tundra). Do they go to school for this?

(8,716 posts)Cheney, Literally. Short, soft and a freakin joke. He speaks and acts exactly like the Dick. He is the evil sidekick to this version of the Baffoon president. Anyone see a pattern in GOP rule?
that he speaks like Cheney. I saw a distinct resemblance form the time Cheney was quoting the false lead from the NY Times on aluminum tubes.

(17,984 posts)Yesterday I could close my eyes and hear Cheney.
Cheney now has a daughter that is as nasty as her father. She tried to run against Enzi, without warning him. Enzi was a family friend. He was shocked. She failed.
Of course Enzi is not really a nice fellow either. I listened to him in a Health care meeting about rural health care. Sanders brought a Doctor who was very familar with the lack of rural health care. All Enzi did was sit and grumble that it cost too much. A typical hateful old Republican.

(5,524 posts)I just see it as an opportunity to further his propaganda and keep 40% of the public in the dark.
The problem is that the GOP has no problem in weaponizing classified information. Sometimes that is in selectively releasing information as in the case of Valerie Plame.
Other times I think it is maneuvering around what cannot be revealed. I am convinced that the CIA was doing something classified in Benghazi. I think the GOP knows that Hillary couldn't tell the real story so they set her up to take the blame. Being a patriot, she was unable to say how it really played out.

(16,113 posts)to get copies of whatever they give to Barr (that's one of the requests in the story)? And this isn't for a investigation that's complete, it's for one that is currently in progress? Do I understand that part correctly?
FBaggins
(26,727 posts)This letter is really Schiff's response to Trump's action. The "request" at the end is a nonstarter from what I can see.
Congressional oversight authority does not extend to getting information before the executive branch takes an action. Moreover.. the cited code section (50 U.S. Code § 3092) does not create the claimed "statutory obligation" to keep the committee informed of all IC activities... just "intelligence activities" (really just "financial intelligence activities" ... which can't possibly be stretched to include what they're asking for.
On edit... I just noticed that he's insisting on getting anything (regardless of classification) that is sent over to DOJ for the AG's review. Which means that whether or not it gets declassified at all... the committee get's to see it. Definitely not happening.

(26,727 posts)and doesn't care.
It's useful either way. When Coats tells him "no" (or just ignores the request), it's one more thing to add to the list of the administration refusing legitimate congressional oversight.
That's of partisan benefit... but the underlying fight really goes back decades and is between the legislative and executive branch (regardless of who controls either one at any given time).
hughee99
(16,113 posts)He's going to say that the DOJ is obstructing Congressional oversight, but his requests don't really fall under the oversight rules. Had the republicans requested that congress be kept up to date on the goings on in Comey's investigation of Clinton and a list of and access to all documents Comey requested during the investigation, we would have suggested that they were attempting to interfere in that investigation.
