'Handmaid's Tale' actress slams 'disgusting' abortion bans
The actress who plays the fearsome Aunt Lydia on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” says she finds restrictive new abortion legislation being passed in states across the country “disgusting.”
Earlier this month, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed a bill into law that would ban almost all abortions in the state, while other states including Kentucky, Louisiana and Georgia have passed bills that prohibit abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy.
Lawmakers who support the abortion bills, actress Ann Dowd said in an interview with Newsweek published Friday, should “go to church and ask for forgiveness.”
“That’s my advice to all of you who are dying to shut down women’s rights,” said Dowd, 63.
In “The Handmaid’s Tale,” set in the near future, the small number of fertile women left in the world are forced into a slavery system based on their reproductive status.
After Alabama’s majority-Republican Senate passed the abortion bill in early May, the show began trending on social media. Activists dressed as "Handmaid's Tale" characters have also protested outside of state capitols to protest abortion legislation.
