Mayor Landrieu, Gov Jindal Urge Citizens to Use Monday, August 27 To Get Ready
August 27, 2012 - At 2:30pm on Monday, August 27, 2012, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Governor Bobby Jindal, along with surrounding parish officials, urged all citizens of Louisiana to use Monday to get prepared for Hurricane Isaac.

Officials urged those citizens living outside of the levee system to use today to self-evacuate, and those living on high ground and within the levee system to make all plans and gather all supplies needed to bunker down in their homes and shelter-in-place.

As of Monday, August 27, Isaac is predicted to be a Category 1 Hurricane when it hits land early Wednesday morning. New Orleans will begin to feel tropical storm force winds as early as Monday night. Winds will pick up Tuesday and both rain and high winds are expected as Isaac passes through.

Citizens are urged to call 311 to report flooding or downed tree limbs or other infrastructure issues. New Orleans Police Department will be strictly enforcing the no-wake law, which makes it illegal to drive through standing water at greater than 5mph.

"Protecting life is always our first priority," said Mayor Landrieu at his noon press conference. He urged all citizens to use common sense, make a plan, have supplies on hand, and while the City of New Orleans is not calling a mandatory evacuation, if your plan is to leave, to do so now.

In reference to CIty preparation, Landrieu stated, "There is nothing this storm is going to bring us that we are not prepared to handle."

one of the things that have been done in the background without
a lot of fanfare. At least I am hopeful this is the case, and that
all the planning is sound, things will go well.

will once again be completely on their own because there will be no shelters of last resort. Even the Superdome will be closed to them.

I hope everybody with an attic has a way to punch a hole in their roof this time.

...my heart is, and it goes out to everyone in the region and I hope my friends stay safe.

Also, all Audubon parks (the zoo, IMAX, the aquarium, and the others) are all closed until Wednesday. They are set to re-open on Thursday, conditions permitting. I am still on the email list for the zoo and this just arrived tonight.
