Romney Campaign Official: We Could Win Without Florida
Rich Beeson, the national political director for the Mitt Romney Campaign., speaking with Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep on Tuesday, says the Sunshine State would be nice to have in the red column, but it's not a sine qua non for clinching victory in November.
"You never want to say that one state is critical to a win," Beeson says. "Obviously Florida is a critical state to us, but there are other ways to get past 270." There are lots of ways to get to 270 and they don't all involve Florida's 29 electoral votes, according to Rich Beeson, the national political director for the Mitt Romney Campaign.

(33,497 posts)sorry Beeson, but if your boy loses Florida he's toast. Obama is the one with several different paths to 270.

(8,377 posts)A lot of the polls on both sides are doctored to try to outmaneuver the other side. Rasmussen is famous for this. They have all sorts of wacky polls, then right before the election they put out "legitimate polls", so that they can claim "we were the most accurate pollster out there in 2008" etc. They aren't the only ones doing this.
Ignore the polls. if you want to know how the race really stands, simply look where the candidates are spending their time. If they are defending what should be sure bets, they are in trouble. If they are on the offensive in states they weren't expected to win, that is usually a very positive sign.
However this case is a little different. If Romney can't win Florida, then his only hope is to run the table on all the swing states AND also grab either Michigan or New Hampshire. It will be very difficult to get either MI or NH, so he will have to spend a lot of time there. And if he is campaigning hard in MI and NH, that is a sign he expects to lose FL. If he expects to win FL, he won't spend a minute in MI or NH down the stretch.
Romney was in MI last week. That isn't exactly the same as conceding FL because it is too early for that. But I guaran-damn-tee you that his advisers looked at the Florida numbers post-Ryan and said, "Holy Crap!!! We're in big trouble in Florida. We've got to try to open up a path to victory if we lose Florida. The only scenarios that get us to 270 require MI or NH. Send him to Michigan, pronto!!!"
