Villaraigosa: Republicans 'can't just trot out a brown face'

Updated, 1:30 p.m. - TAMPA, Fla. -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that Republicans "can't just trot out a brown face" to make inroads with the Latino community, an increasingly important growing bloc.

As the GOP prepares to showcase some of its rising Hispanic stars during the next two days of its national convention, the Democratic mayor dismissed Republican overtures toward Latinos as insincere.

"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," Villaraigosa said at a press conference here organized by the Democratic National Committee.

"People are going to vote just like Anglos do, just like African-Americans do, and virtually every demographic group. They vote for people based on what they say, what they've done, and what they're going to do," he later added.

McCain honestly thought that by choosing Palin as a running mate, he would make inroads with women because just like they think running a Black person will get Blacks to vote for him, having someone with the same sexual organs is as deep women go when it comes to deciding for whom to vote.

A funny story from the 2000 elections. I was in Chicago in October for the Hispanic Leadership Conference, and I was hanging out with a friend of mine who worked at University of Texas in El Paso at the time. UTEP offers a program where Mexican nationals across the border in Juarez can study there for about the same amount. My friend had brought several students - both American and Mexican to the conference, and they told me that members of the Bush campaign (misrepresenting themselves) had approached them about an all-paid trip to Philadelphia as part of a program to understand American politics better. They jumped at the chance and were BUSSED to Philly for the GOP Convention where they thought they were getting to observe the convention from backstage until they were herded onto the stage when W's Hispanic nephew, George P. Bush gave his speech about why Hispanics should support W. They were then bussed back to El Paso, realizing they had been used but not really caring because they got a free trip out of it. They showed me some newspaper pictures of themselves standing behind George P., looking confused.

I always found it interesting that W. couldn't find a group of Hispanics who would be willing to stand up on stage for him.
