Could we be seeing the effective end of the GOP?

I've got C-span with the RNC on, and they have had several votes, including voice votes on "alternate delegates". On almost every vote, I have heard what sounded like an equal number of Nays to the shouts of Aye. Yet, the Chairman always said that the Ayes won which obviously was the "approved" position. Half of the crowd looks really, really pissed!

Also, they obviously don't know that Puerto Rico is part of the US. When the Chair of one committee, who happens to be a woman from Puerto Rico, took the stage, the crowd broke out in chants of USA! USA!

My dream has been that the Tea Party and the Paulites would break off. Could that dream be coming true?

by the dominant faction--in this case, tea party extremists?

A winning party moves to the center in order to form a governing coalition with clear majorities in the House and Senate, while a losing party has nothing more to lose by becoming even more extreme. If anybody's going to be forced out of a losing Republican party, IMO it won't be a tea partier.

and if we're left with a strong Democratic Party against a Tea Party (as if that whole thing wasn't an astroturf scheme gone really really awry), with the GOP out of the picture, I think I like the sound of that. You don't?

Just like Jason in Friday 13 series, they always comes back. Look at how they are trying to target young voters now.

We were talking this shit after 2006 and 2008. Then came 2010 with citizens united.

The Republican party is too big to fail and corporations and individuals have invested too much in the party to let it collapse.

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly help push the Republican break up if I could.

Peace,

of plutocrats, greedheads, the religulously insane, neanderbaggers, racists, bigots and old-fashioned kooks can be duct-taped together much longer.

We are seeing, to mangle Churchill, the end of the beginning of the end.

If they break off, I think the GOP would be stronger without them. We don't want that and I don't think it will happen, at least not for a while.

You can't keep referring to yourselves as 2 parties and expect the sum to be greater than its parts. Each side weakens the other.

For instance, I was sent a link to a blog called the Moderates, Romney Wreak Havoc at National Convention - Will They Destroy the Republican Party?

There is a fight between the Corporate Conservative big money wing of the Republican Party and the Radical Religious / Radical Racist Tea Party / Libertarian wings of the party. This is the type of thing that tore the Whig Party apart before the Civil war. We will have to wait and see if, after nominating a member of the Corporate Conservative Big Money Wing, the rest of them will set down and shut up or take their toys and go home.

Old guard republicans are finding shelter in the modern Democratic party. Old guard Democrats have been shoved out the door.

In reality, the tea party leaders are letting their rank and file stew and fuss. They know that mitt needs to look centrist to get elected. They know that they will get what they want once paul mittens is in office. Just watch how "liberal" and main stream mitt will campaign. He got the nomination from the wackos and now has to pick up the stupid 7% that says they haven't made up their mind. mitt's handlers know that the wackos scare the dumb seven, so they will be put on back burner for the next few months.

the GOP is needed to keep the shit pot stirred with controversy. And controversy sells.

After the long self-serving speech, Speaker gave vote count for Romney and then her mic was cut off before she could list rest of votes. You could clearly hear someone saying "whoever was controlling that mic did a good job".

On repeat, 3 votes for Paul and 1 undecided.

Somehow, I think it's going to be very hard to kill this dragon. Every time it trips and chops a limb off on a sharp blade, it will grow a new one.
