Birds are starving all over the world...

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/politics/a28067879/two-penguin-chicks-40-000-colony-climate-change-birds/

Here's a cheery thought to start the week. All over the world, for the past few years, birds have been starving to death. Some of it is attributable to those clever Chinese climate hoaxsters. Some of it also is attributable to general and casual environmental vandalism. But birds are starving to death all over the world.

(H/t to Ben See—@ClimateBen—on the electric Twitter machine for collecting all the stories.)

We put small cat biscuits out the front of the house for the large magpies. Several individuals and a family of five do the rounds of the neighbourhood, at their allocated times. Can just about set the clock by their visiting hours.
At the back, a table for seeds. Flocks of doves visit. 5 Kg seed lasts 4 days.

Neighbours do it too. Bird baths, trays of water for the warmer days. A joy to see birds having a bath, or drinking.

All are welcome. But yes, the penguins . . . somebody help them!

I can't quite feed the birds here because it attracts bears. I get the bears anyway, but it's better not to tempt them further. I see a LOT of hummingbirds at my feeder though. They battle each other for the nectar...

Where do you live?

We're moving to black bear country where future neighbors send us pics of bears on their decks; so, like you, we will not be able to feed the birds there. We live in an eastcoast bird sanctuary now. It's glorious and we're most appreciative.

Glad this is posted in GD because these sort of threads aren't usually read when posted in the E&E forum.

I get a fair amount of songbirds flying through... thinking of putting up a bath this year. And yes it's always black bears. They are not really threatening but it's sometimes weird to walk to your car when there's a bear in your yard...

But, I've been shocked this year at how many species of songbirds, especially I see. Even the beautiful little yellow finches that I'd not seen in almost a decade (I think West Nile Virus wiped them out--maybe they are developing some immunity) are back in large numbers and bluebirds (not the ubiquitous blue jays) are back. I don't think I'd seen one in Colorado at all.

The abundance is actually welcome but startling because we have a very large raptor population too--even in the neighborhoods
