Shorter Boehnner: My family's bar didn't serve blacks

John Boehnner's RNC speech was built on an odd hook. First, we found out he used to be a bartender, which explains a lot, but I digress...

The hook was that if Obama tried to enter the Cincinnati bar Boehnner grew up in, full of the regular-guy backbone of America types who hang out in bars all day, and said those things Obama says, they would throw him out of the bar.

Big fun.

was framed as a story about how the people who hung out in his family's bar would throw Obama out if he came in the bar talking about his policies.

But the between the lines... the atmospherics of the speech was conjuring a mental picture a bunch of drunkards throwing a black man out of a white working-class bar.

There are some Americans (hopefully few) who will, by November, find somewhat to their surprise, that they dislike black people.

A substantial number of people who don't know how to vote yet probably also tend to think what TV ads tell them to think.

then what are we supposed to think is the reason? People get bounced from bars for specific examples of bad behavior and Boner knows that, having owned a bar. Did Boner even think this through? If Obama in that hypothetical bar did nothing but talk, then the only real reason for bouncing him is the one given by the OP. I guess Boner can always claim he was drunk, which he probably was.

Basically he was saying anyone who didn't agree with the owners of the bar on politics. They would throw them out. Great business model Not!

That's why a lot of people go to bars, to bullshit about politics and everything else while getting drunk. Basically he gave no reason to bounce Obama in realistic terms for anyone who's owned a bar and we can only surmise it was for something else.

without more details, there is no other way to translate it than "regular guy" = white and Obama was not. Sounds like red meat racism to me.

but I think I remember seeing a video once were Obama was in a bar, and tipped like 30 bucks for a budweiser. If I were a waitress, or a bartender, and the owners kicked someone out like that I'd be pretty upset. Mr. Speaker your fathers bar was run by morons. Also Boehnner mentioned he would throw someone who couldn't remember the last time he got a raise. Well I remember the last time millions of people got raises is when the minimum was was increased, and you and your Republican buddies opposed it. Finally being privileged enough that your father owner a bar, and could give you a job doesn't make a regular job. Most of us have to get our own jobs.
