(28,120 posts)Gambling and entertainment bring in money and it's an amazing building but I would also have the "not in my backyard" feeling if I lived there.
I'm sure it'll provide jobs for the locals too, so that's a good thing.
Thanks for posting, my friend.

(13,892 posts)I'm curious how high the neck of the guitar will go or will it just be the body? So Fla is flat as a pancake and this thing sticks out. It's a very surreal sight to see jets on a flight path for Ft Lauderdale justa scootin by this thing. Granted the path is about a mile and 3/4 away but it looks closer..

I hate how they have taken down so many of those great little Art Deco Motels.

(9,067 posts)I don't gamble, but I've been to that Hardrock a few times. Quite a sight.

(34,136 posts)The one in Tampa is a plain rectangular building near the intersection of I-4 and US 92.

(22,976 posts)Give me a building that reflects a REAL guitar, like Jeff Becks workhorse Fender Esquire. Of course, the structure would be condemned before it opened.

(100,063 posts)I mean if you are going to make a building shaped like a guitar, why not go all the way?

Don't make another Basket Building:

(22,061 posts)Looks like a Longaberger basket.

(33,310 posts)Now it sits forlorn and empty, another useless tribute to a rich old white man's ego.
Robert Venturi called these buildilngs "Ducks", they were essentially signs, but in the shape of another object. When they're roadside stands, that's one thing. A high-rise? Ugh.
Par for the course in a country that cares more about money than beauty.

Is this in Columbus? What happened?

(33,310 posts)Basket Building
The seven-story, 180,000-square-foot building was designed by The Longaberger Company, and executed by NBBJ and Korda Nemeth Engineering. The building opened in 1997. The basket handles weigh almost 150 tons and can be heated during cold weather to prevent ice damage. Originally, Dave Longaberger wanted all of the Longaberger buildings to be shaped like baskets, but only the headquarters was completed at the time of his death. The company stopped paying property taxes on the building at the end of 2014 Workers moved out in 2016.
In December 2017, the building was purchased by Steve Coon, a Canton, Ohiobased developer who owns Coon Restoration, and his partner, Bobby George, of Cleveland. By November 2018, the pair had put it up for sale.

(22,061 posts)I was up there for a company visit once, and Dave Longaberger went scurrying across the reception area....head down, wearing jeans and a flannel shirt. I think things started going downhill when his daughters took over.
The town (Dublin?) was kind of spooky though, because it all belonged to Longaberger......the shops, the school, restaurants, everything. We are Longaberger.
They were a good client though.

(33,310 posts)is it funny? a "cool" idea? I'm genuinely curious.
as an designer/architect, I know that i'm a snob who hates everything that everyone else likes, and vice versa.
for instance, I hate Las Vegas, and the casinos on the Strip especially. but millions of people think it's the happiest place on earth. I'll never understand, but I'd like to.

(53,410 posts)people finding it aesthetically beautiful. Its gaudy and tacky in a place a lot of people think of as a playground. It appeals to younger people who party and to young families. Hard Rock Café is all about playtime. This building has an unmistakable message and novelty and the curious will flock to it. Its purpose is not to be confused with elegance or class.
For me its a societal curiosity, almost anthropological, a statement of the youth of our times and how theyre changing structures. Itll definitely become an iconic representation of Miami, like the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco, the opera house in Sydney, the giant Ferris wheel or the egg shaped building in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, unmistakable from any other city.
I try not to judge things because if I did I would miss a lot of really interesting aspects of our world.

(33,310 posts)Judgement is essential to our nature as humans. No one can avoid it. You said it's gaudy and tacky, not to be confused with elegance or class. That's judgement.
The shape is based on the Gibson Les Paul model, which is an 67 year old guitar design. So much for the Youth of our Times!

(53,410 posts)The words I used were descriptive, not judgmental. You seemed to be asking a genuine question but my bad for obviously misunderstanding.

(33,310 posts)You said you try not to judge; I believe everyone judges aesthetics, no matter how hard we try. Your description is your judgement.

(4,575 posts)I like kitsch. I havent seen it in person but it doesn't look too big. I wouldnt want to see that every few blocks. I'm talking about the basket not Vegas although I have seen pockets of beauty here and there.

(13,892 posts)Wind speed increases with height in a hurricane.. I want to be in Vermont when it hits!!
Imagine all that glass blowing around in 130 to 155 mph wind?? No thank you.
After living thru Andrew and a few others, no thanks.. Actually it's the aftermath that is the pain.. 90+ degrees, high humidity and NO ELECTRICITY sucks big time.. Home generators are a must. Its good the electric company has power up in 3 to 6 days.. They have also got rid of many of the wood power poles and replaced them with big fat concrete poles.. Time will tell if they work better.. The wood ones would snap in a good blow.
