Is President Trump trying to hijack the Independence Day celebration on the National Mall by turning it into a taxpayer-funded campaign rally? If he does, the Trump administration will violate federal appropriations law and the Hatch Act. In that case, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale had better have the campaigns checkbook handy and be ready to write plenty of zeros.
At a kick-off rally for his re-election campaign last week, Trump sounded a lot like he was laying the groundwork for politicizing Americas birthday party
This election is not merely a verdict on the amazing progress weve made. Its a verdict on the un-American conduct of those who tried to undermine our great democracy, and undermine you. And by the way, on July 4th, in Washington, D.C., come on down, were going have a big day. Bring your flags, bring those flags, bring those American flags, July 4th. Were going to have hundreds of thousands of people. Were going to celebrate America. Sounds good, right? July 4th. Celebrate America. This election is a verdict on whether we want to live in a country where the people who lose an election refuse to concede and spend the next two years trying to shred our Constitution and rip your country apart.
The very next day, Trumps Interior Secretary, David Bernhardt, responded by issuing an announcement confirming that the July 4th event will feature remarks by President Donald J. Trump. Trumps participation in the event will likely command the attention of major television networks and thousands of event goers on the National Mall. Its the kind of advertising no other presidential candidate could buy, and it appears Trumps campaign wont be buying it either. The plan, it seems, is to stick you with the bill.

Could be fun to get a TRO on fat ass July 3.

(21,551 posts)the hatch act is not a criminal statute, so you really can't prosecute someone for violating it.

Trump will have VIOLATED the Hatch Act. He is walking on a very tight rope right now. America should be nervous despite what the law says.

(22,976 posts)Inject 45 with some magical truth serum, and youd get: Bring your flags, bring those flags, bring those North Korean flags, those Saudi flags, those Russian flags, and that white flag of total surrender and big hugs for the tough guys like I want to be, I LOVE that one!
Stick that asshole in front of a live microphone, and he has zero self-control. The 4th of July will be no different. All the interminable self-congratulating, the mugging, the unfunny jokes, all the unpresidential wretched excess. No doubt hell be selling MAGA crap that day as well. The Hatch Act? 45 never heard of it, and Mitch McConnells so busy stuffing his owners pockets, he couldnt give two shits.

(33,643 posts)that COULD have tried to appropriate this event for their own political purposes, but had the CLASS and DECORUM to NOT DO SO.
Yet, this year we gotta watch (or hear about at least) this f***face asshole pulling this fascist bullshit on our Nation's most sacred day ... it's sickening, pathetic, and wrong.

(22,976 posts)The issues are somewhat different, but there are many similarities as well. Nixon himself was in absentia, unlike 45s plans.

[The] 1970 Honor America Independence Day celebration on the National Mall [was] organized by wealthy supporters of Richard Nixon. The 1970 event was aimed at shoring up support for Nixon amid antiwar protests and the fatal shooting that year of four Kent State University students by the Ohio National Guard.
The event instead blossomed into a free-for-all involving furious neo-Nazis and other conservatives and a smoke-in by antiwar hippies. (Before this is over, I may need some of that stuff myself, quipped master of ceremonies Bob Hope.) Nixon was not on the scene.
