Mostly, presidents have stayed backstage and let citizens acclaim their country. In 1989, I received an invite to the South Lawn of the White House. George and Barbara Bush were not present, but an assortment of scribes and White House staffers mingled, watched fireworks and sang patriotic tunes ...
If there is to be a wish this Independence Day, it is we will again be touched by the "better angels of our nature", and that our Capitol and country be cleansed of Trumpism.
