By Ken Meyer Jul 1st
As President Donald Trump came off of his unprecedented visit to North Korea over the weekend, a new report suggests that the Trump administration is thinking about a new arrangement in which the Hermit Kingdom is allowed to remain a nuclear power.
[iNew York Times reports] that the White House could be willing to accept a nuclear freeze in which they allow North Korea to maintain their current capacity for nuclear power. This would run counter to the administrations repeated calls for complete denuclearization, and the Times reporting says that while it could stem the growth of North Koreas arsenal, it would not dismantle any existing weapons, variously estimated at 20 to 60. Nor would it limit the Norths missile capability.
From NYT:
Sources say it isnt clear if North Korea would accept the terms of the deal as reported, and National Security Advisor John Bolton is responding that he and his team havent been involved in negotiating this proposal.

(3,299 posts)Although the approach described in this article reflects the inconsistency and fitful nature of this administration's unprofessional "diplomacy," there is nothing new about the idea. This is an attempt by the Times to denigrate a more sophisticated approach recommended by experts all along. The net result is to drive policy back into the hands of extremist neocons like Bolton who share the delusion that they can force North Korea to submit to their ultimatum.

(7,142 posts)behind a "sophisticated" approach. The article says that it is the Trump administration that is suggesting to allow NK to have nukes. If a sophisticated approach means that Trump is playing 11 dimensional chess, I don't buy it.

(3,299 posts)I'm talking about what policy experts have been recommending all along, a step by step, approach of action for action, reciprocal trust building measures along parallel tracks of policy goals, that move the North Koreans toward denuclearization in rational phases.
The critics of anything other than Bolton's all or nothing approach which sabotaged the Hanoi summit oversimplify the issues and create Manichean choices that jeopardize international security. This isn't about Trump but making the issue simply about Trump is a way to obscure the issues and continue on a course which can only lead to failure.
As Jenny Town from 38 North says "there is no learning curve."
