At around 7:30 AM, July 1, 1863, a small patrol of the 8th IL Cav led by Lieutenant Marcellus Jones spots the glint of morning light off burnished barrels of rifled muskets. It is as they had expected - Heth's division is marching on Gettysburg. Jones levels his carbine and fires

First New York Artillery, Battery B (Pettit's Battery).
Enlisted on Nov. 11, 1861, served in every major engagement (by the Army of the Potomac), never wounded, and was present at Lee's surrender.
His battery was one of the ones on Seminary Ridge giving Pickett's charge the welcome it deserved.

50 miles away, but could hear the cannon barrage on Day 3.

the Battle of Shilo. He lost his left arm and died at age 48. I'm very proud to know his story. Pvt. Robert Roscoe, Indiana Infantry.
