"SNIP.....

Michael Tomasky: “A number of observers, myself included, have written pieces in recent years arguing that the Republican Party is no longer simply trying to compete with and defeat the Democratic Party on a level playing field. Today, rather than simply playing the game, the Republicans are simultaneously trying to rig the game’s rules so that they never lose.”

“The aggressive gerrymandering, which the Supreme Court just declared to be a matter beyond its purview; the voter suppression schemes; the dubious proposals that haven’t gone anywhere — yet — like trying to award presidential electoral votes by congressional district rather than by state, a scheme that Republicans in five states considered after the 2012 election and that is still discussed: These are not ideas aimed at invigorating democracy. They are hatched and executed for the express purpose of essentially fixing elections.”

I'm sure you'll get a lot of similar responses. My comment was a K&R as much as anything else.

It's all good.

is novel to us. But this was a good and short article explaining all the ways the GOP were gunning for democracy long before Trump.

Very much for Democracy... as long as they are in control.

Republicans have been at war with Democracy for decades on the local, state and federal level. Through voter suppression/ district gerrymandering/ litigation/ legislation.

Unfortunately they have been very successful. I read a report recently that said republicans have appointed 15 of the last 19 Supreme Court Justices. When Karl Roves said they wanted a “permanent majority” he was being 100% truthful. They do not feel Dems/Progressives should be in charge of anything and when they do have a majority the republicans obstruct as much as possible even if that means simply skip town to the next state over.

The Democratic Party needs to stop fooling itself with the idea that republicans are going play fair and govern in any type of bipartisan way because republicans are not. The Dems in the House need to use the power they have as a majority now. They need to stop threatening to do something and do it.

care about democracy at all and probably even despise it.

Back in the baby bush days I began to suspect that the leaders of the repub party were all aware of some impending doom about to destroy all life and so they felt justified in raping and pillaging, as bad people would, using their political positions to grab whatever they could before the end. I just couldn't understand anyone acting so maliciously just for kicks.

I'm less naive now.

When anyone asks me how I feel about repubs I explain I think the party leaders (official or not) are psychotic and malicious, and the repub voters are are all fools allowing themselves to be used in exchange for permission to simply be mean.

That's their primary goal. They make allies with White nationalists, cultural conservatives, gun nuts, and ant-reproductive rights people in order to attain their primary goal.
