House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is calling on President Trump to adopt the changes to migrant detention policies that House Democrats proposed in their version of a border funding bill but were not included in the final legislation passed last week.
The letter to Trump, released publicly Tuesday, comes amid growing outrage over over conditions faced by migrants detained at the southern border - which was bolstered after Democrats raised alarms while inspecting facilities there this week.
Pelosi urged Trump to take specific "immediate actions" as proposed in House Democrats' initial bill and highlighted three policy changes lawmakers sought in last week's negotiations over a $4.5 billion package to provide resources for agencies handling the influx of migrants at the border. The actions include directing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to swiftly establish health and safety standards for migrants in government custody, such as provisions for water, hygiene and nutrition.
"In our conversations, you and the Vice President said our 30 day timeline to establish final plans was not achievable but did not offer an alternate deadline. There must be a date certain to establish plans that utilize the expertise of organizations, including the American Association of Pediatrics, which have outlined standards of care for children in the care of DHS," Pelosi wrote.

......House Democrats sought to include stricter standards for migrants in holding facilities in any legislation to meet the Trump administration's request for emergency funding.
They argued that the Senate version of the bill, which was produced by bipartisan negotiators, didn't go far enough. Still, the bill passed the upper chamber by a vote of 84-8 with most Senate Democrats supporting it. With the Trump administration warning that funds would run dry in early July and time running short before Congress was scheduled to start its July 4 recess, House Democrats ultimately caved and passed the Senate bill.

(3,433 posts)I understand that Pelosi has limited ability but I refuse to accept the idea that we shouldnt impeach because it may be politically damaging. We are either a nation of laws or we are not. We either accept that the oath of office demands action and that our representatives are honor-bound to hold the executive branch accountable... or we don't. If we accept that the oath means nothing as Republicans do then are we really better just because our platform is inclusive and humane? If we are Democrats because we believe and the rights of everybody then what does that matter if our founding document it's shifted to the side when it is inconvenient?.
I recognize that holding the house is extremely important and necessary but at what cost? I can foresee no circumstances or situation with Republicans are going to support impeachment or removing the president. They have engaged in illegal unconstitutional activity for a very long time. Their oath means nothing to them because party is everything. Favoring the rich over the poor is everything.
The founders could see a time where the executive branch was corrupted, where the president consolidates power and fancies himself a dictator or monarch. We are living in that time and we are at a crossroads. This country will either step up and fulfill the promise and responsiblities required to maintain our republic or we will descend to political convenience and selective anarchy

(3,433 posts)And quite frankly, Trumps gross human rights violations are further evidence of his illegal activity.
As for the house, they have no ability what so ever to address the problem without the support of the Senate and the president.

(18,486 posts)Responded to a post about what's happening on the border with a demand about why the house should impeach him. I assume you responded that way because you thought the two issues were connected.

(16,076 posts)well, they won't save us.
Or even really help.
But they are sternly worded!
They do nothing, except ensure that everyone knows that nothing will be done to curb the abuse of power.
That'll teach them!

(16,076 posts)he's so likely to listen to reason.
The money is already in his friends' pockets AND he gets to torture brown people. He loves what is happening at the border.
