We usually have a relaxed day BBQ-ing then watch fireworks at the park, but this year I don't see how I can just act like it's just another 4th of July. How can I celebrate freedom when there are children held in cages just miles away....

(8,231 posts)It is he and his morally bankrupt minions who are abusing children and adults. He has already ruined so much I would look for any opportunity where he does not creep in and spoil. FUCK HIM.

(21,596 posts)My kiddo and I will have fun swimming in our pool in the evening after dinner.
Later on, well watch fireflies and light sparklers.
It is super hot and humid here in Georgia, so most people want to be as cool as possible. Thankfully, it cools down somewhat about 9pm.

(15,380 posts)Balloon twisting. I have something tonight at a giant golf course/private club (posted it on Facebook with the message, "Ima throw a Baby Ruth into the swimming pool." and then a pancake breakfast at a church that's part of an annual 5K. The last few years, another twister and I also had an evening event in a park that was put on by a local (republican) politician, but he has no funding for it this year. Too bad. We charged pretty high rates, and the taco truck that showed up is a good one.

But I might make it a point to listen to these tunes:

(15,082 posts)Where we also celebrate our sister city from Mexico. Somehow, this seems like an especially good thing this year.
Plus our local Indivisible group is marching in the parade, and if I get up and out early enough, I plan to march too. Gonna wear my "Nevertheless She Persisted" t-shirt that my daughter gave me for Christmas.
Nothing to celebrate.
It will be kinda obvious. I've had a small display at the end of our cul de sac for at least 17 years. Not the last 2 and not this year. The day he leaves by whatever means I will celebrate then.

(2,146 posts)As to the boarder issue...even Jeh Johnson said..."Chain link barriers, partitions, fences, cages -- whatever you want to call them -- were not invented on January 2017,"

So, Happy birthday, America. And welcome to all of our new citizens.
Today and tomorrow. And I'll be praying for IQ45 to swallow a live grenade as a reality tv stunt.

(3,750 posts)I love much of what America has been. From time to time and here and there. There has been much to be proud of. Much of the goodness of America manifests on the individual level with good people doing good things to other people. Those actions usually go undetected by those at the top. Our National actions that were good were empowered by those good people and others who went along or simply stood out of the way.
I believe our Nation has been on a steady downward march since the late seventies. Things were getting worse. Fox and the Radio Right came along and the brains have been awashing. 9-11 knocked the brains right out of many Americans. The Republican Party was co-opted with Reaganite shananigans, NEO Con machinations, and Tea Party behavior bordering on anarchy. The Republican mantra became: "Government is the problem." They have spent the last forty years making that mantra reality.
We have traveled from George Washington, a man who was memorialized as a man who could not lie, to Donald J. Trump, a man who seemingly cannot tell the Truth.
I will not celebrate this train wreck of a country on our National Day of celebration. I will mourn, instead.

(42,550 posts)as a celebration. I have never understood the point of a parade and you couldnt pay me to fight the crowds at a big fireworks show just to hear recorded music and see a few colorful explosions.

I am a HUGE decorations person. I have flags and lights and red, white, and blue everything. I have star spangled shoes and clothes. It will all be back on July 4th, 2021. We have kiddie concentration camps. I just simply cannot.
