Jeffrey Epstein's arrest shows the power of one newspaper's investigation

When politicians attack investigations or fact checks from reputable, journalistically sound news organizations, they put not only democracy, but often justice itself at risk.

In the past year the Jeffrey Epstein case was catapulted onto the national news radar by one newspaper, the Miami Herald, and by one reporter in particular, Julie K. Brown. The paper's Link to tweet
" target="_blank">"Perversion of Justice" series came out last November, and Brown has stayed on the story ever since.

As soon as The Daily Beast broke the news that Epstein had been arrested on Saturday evening, fellow journalists and other observers credited Brown and thanked her for the tenacious investigation.
............................................................................
True to form, she sought to shift the spotlight, away from her own work and toward her subjects. "The REAL HEROES HERE were the courageous victims that faced their fears and told their stories," she tweeted Sunday.

"It takes a lot of courage, understandably," Brown said. "This happened to them a long time ago, and many of them feel ashamed."

She also discussed her reporting process. "What I tried to do, since the story ran and got all that attention, was to keep hounding away at the story. I didn't give up on it," she said. "You know, it's sometimes easy to walk away and just let things happen. But I just felt that I had to keep pursuing it, and not let the powers-that-be, so to speak, the law enforcement people, the people in government, forget that these women were out there. And they're talking and they want to tell their story and they want justice."

There are journalists (most of us) who aren't in the profession to "make a name for themselves," as I've read averred on this site. They're just good citizens who want to hold the powerful accountable for their actions — you know, afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. That old thing.

To Julie K. Brown and The Miami Herald! Hip-hip hooray!

but one thing that makes my heart swell with pride, is our Miami Herald. What they did (especially Julie K. Brown) was really something to behold, what a difference one can make.

Elie Honig, a former federal and state prosecutor, said that most prosecutors he knows make a habit of consulting newspapers daily to look for useful information, particularly from investigative reporters.

It's a shame so many are losing their jobs. They provide a useful service.

Julie K. Brown and Vicky Ward have been dogging this Jeffrey Epstein story for over 15 years.
Thank you for your awesome work!
