Top figures in the conservative legal community are stunned and depressed by President Trump's cave in his fight for a citizenship question on the 2020 Census.

The state of play: Sources say Leonard Leo and other Federalist Society stalwarts were shocked and floored by how weak the decision was. "What was the dance ... all about if this was going to be the end result?" a conservative leader asked.

"A total waste of everyone’s time. ... It’s certainly going to give people pause the next time one has to decide how far to stick one’s neck out."

One GOP strategist called it a "punch in the gut."

A week after insisting that he was "absolutely moving forward," Trump said in the Rose Garden that he instead was directing federal agencies to try to compile the information using existing databases. (AP)

Democrats would have demanded impeachment if Trump had defied the SC and contrary to popular belief, Trump dreads an impeachment hearing.

Trump got what he wanted anyway. Latinos are so fearful now that they are not going to fill out the census forms. This census is going to be under reported by millions of people. Trump lost the battle but won the war.

Constitutional issues aside, one could become rich betting against Trump making good on his daily threats. Hello, allies!!!!! Read the New York Times reporting on the family's financial dealing back when Fred Sr. was alive. Donald Trump says he's going to do things in the hopes that people will react accordingly in ways that he wants them to. Then he doesn't do said thing. He's done this forever. It's one of his biggest MOs. He does it WEEKLY, if not more often.

Anybody "punched in the gut" when Trump doesn't do what Trump says he's going to do is just flat out dumb.
